HGV Medical Requirements FOR BIRMINGHAM DRIVERS

HGV Medical Requirements FOR BIRMINGHAM DRIVERS
All HGV and LGV drivers in the UK hold a Group 2 driving licence, which carries stricter medical standards than an ordinary car licence. A D4 medical examination is required in the following situations:
When applying for your first HGV or LGV licence.
When renewing your Group 2 licence. The DVLA requires a D4 medical at each renewal: every five years until age 45, every five years from 45 to 65, and annually from age 65 onwards.
If the DVLA requests one following a reported health change.
If your employer or transport operator requires a periodic health check as a condition of employment.
A GMC-registered doctor must carry out the examination. You do not need a referral from your NHS GP. Most drivers in Birmingham and across the West Midlands book privately, as NHS GPs do not routinely carry out D4 examinations during standard appointments. Our Edgbaston clinic offers quick, reliable appointments with no waiting list, and we complete and sign your D4 form on the day.
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 is the DVLA’s official medical examination report for Group 2 driving licences. Your doctor fills it in during your Birmingham appointment and signs it. You keep a copy and send the original to the DVLA with your licence application or renewal.
The form records the following:
Vision. The DVLA requires a minimum acuity of 6/9 in the better eye and 6/12 in the other, with or without corrective lenses. Field of vision must also meet Group 2 standards.
Blood pressure. Readings must be below 180/100 mmHg at the time of examination. Results at or above this level may require treatment before the licence can be issued.
Cardiovascular and neurological history. Conditions such as angina, previous heart attacks, seizures, blackouts and TIAs are assessed carefully. Some conditions require a specified symptom-free period before a licence can be granted.
Other health conditions. Diabetes, sleep apnoea, renal disease and certain psychiatric conditions are relevant to Group 2 standards and are documented accurately on the form.

Preparing for Your HGV Medical IN BIRMINGHAM

Preparing for Your HGV Medical IN BIRMINGHAM
To help your appointment run without delay, bring the following to our Edgbaston clinic:
Your current driving licence, including the paper counterpart if you still have one.
A list of any medication you take regularly, including the dose and the name of the prescribing doctor.
Your glasses or contact lenses, if you use them for driving.
Details of any health conditions already declared to the DVLA.
Your D4 form if you have downloaded it from gov.uk, though we can provide this at the appointment if not.
If you have a condition that may affect your Group 2 fitness, such as controlled diabetes, a previous heart condition or a neurological history, mention this when you book. Your doctor may need a little more time and, in some cases, may ask you to bring a recent letter from your treating specialist.
If you drive professionally, managing your renewal timeline matters. We recommend booking your examination at least four weeks before your licence expires to allow time for DVLA processing after you submit your D4 form.
