Who Are Private AUTISM ASSESSMENTS FOR?
Who Are Private AUTISM ASSESSMENTS FOR?
Private autism assessments are for adults who suspect they are autistic and want a thorough clinical evaluation from a qualified doctor, without waiting years for an NHS assessment.
NHS autism assessment waiting lists in England are among the longest of any diagnostic service, with patients in many areas waiting three years or more from GP referral to first clinic appointment. For many adults, a late diagnosis only becomes possible privately.
Autism is also significantly underdiagnosed in women and girls, who often present differently to the profile historically associated with autism. Many women reach adulthood without ever being assessed, despite years of struggling with social interaction, sensory sensitivity or burnout.
Our private autism assessments are suitable for:
- Adults who have suspected they are autistic but have never been formally assessed.
- Women and girls who were overlooked or misdiagnosed in childhood.
- Those on an NHS autism waiting list who cannot wait any longer.
- People who want a formal diagnosis for workplace reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act.
- Adults seeking documentation for an EHCP, PIP claim or benefits application.
- Anyone who wants clarity on whether autism explains their lifelong experiences.
At the end of your assessment, your doctor will provide a clear diagnostic conclusion and a written report.

What Happens at a PRIVATE AUTISM ASSESSMENT?
What Happens at a PRIVATE AUTISM ASSESSMENT?
Your autism assessment is a structured clinical appointment with a private doctor experienced in adult autism. The appointment runs considerably longer than a standard GP slot and covers your developmental history, current experiences and how your traits present across different areas of your life.
Your doctor will begin by taking a thorough developmental history, covering childhood, education, social relationships, sensory experiences and how you have managed in different environments over the years. This part of the assessment is detailed and important. If you have access to any school reports, childhood records or a family member who can contribute background information, these can be helpful but are not required.
Your doctor will also use validated diagnostic tools and rating scales during the appointment. These assess social communication, repetitive behaviours and patterns, sensory sensitivities and the broader traits associated with autism in adults.
Where a co-occurring condition is suspected, such as ADHD, anxiety or depression, your doctor will assess this alongside the autism assessment. Many autistic adults also have ADHD, and both can be considered at the same appointment.
By the end of the assessment, your doctor will provide a clear diagnostic conclusion. You will receive a written report suitable for use with an employer, a local authority EHCP application, a benefits claim, or any other formal purpose.

Private vs NHS Autism Assessment: WHAT CHANGES?
Private vs NHS Autism Assessment: WHAT CHANGES?
NHS autism assessment waiting lists in England are among the longest of any health service. In many parts of the country, adults wait three years or more from GP referral to their first clinic appointment. In some areas, waiting lists have been closed to new referrals entirely. The Right to Choose pathway, which allowed patients to access assessment through an independent provider at NHS cost, has been heavily restricted for autism in most areas.
Private autism assessment gives you access to a qualified doctor within weeks rather than years. Your assessment follows recognised clinical standards for adult autism diagnosis and produces a written report you can use immediately.
Employers widely accept a private autism diagnosis for workplace reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010, local authorities for EHCP applications, the Department for Work and Pensions for PIP and benefits claims, and universities for disability support and academic accommodations.
There is no medication for autism itself, but co-occurring conditions including ADHD, anxiety and depression are common and can be assessed and treated alongside your autism assessment. If ADHD is also identified, your doctor can initiate medication at the same visit.
Private autism assessments are covered by most major health insurance policies. Self-paying patients do not need a referral to book.
Frequently Asked Questions ABOUT PRIVATE AUTISM ASSESSMENT
No. You can book directly without seeing your NHS GP first. Many patients contact us without any prior referral, including those who have been waiting on an NHS list for years.
Your doctor will take a thorough developmental history covering childhood, education, social relationships and sensory experiences, and will use validated diagnostic rating scales and clinical interview tools. You will receive a written diagnostic report at the end of your assessment.
Yes. Many autistic adults also have ADHD, and the two can be assessed together. If ADHD is confirmed and medication is clinically appropriate, your doctor can initiate a private prescription at the same visit.
A written diagnostic report from our doctors can support a PIP or benefits application. We recommend checking the current evidence requirements for the specific benefit you are applying for.
No. Many adults are diagnosed with autism for the first time in their 30s, 40s and beyond. A late diagnosis is entirely valid and can be life-changing. There is no age limit for an autism assessment.
We can carry out an autism assessment independently of any ADHD assessment you have had or are having elsewhere. Please bring any existing reports or letters to your appointment.

Yes. Most employers accept a written autism diagnosis from a qualified clinician for workplace reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act; local authorities accept it for EHCP applications; the DWP accepts it for PIP and benefits purposes; and universities accept it for disability support. We recommend checking the specific requirements of the organisation you are dealing with before booking.
Autism assessment appointments are longer than a standard GP slot. Your doctor will give the assessment the time it needs. Depending on your history and how the appointment unfolds, this may take more than one session.
Most major health insurance providers cover private autism assessments. Check your policy terms before booking, or call us and we can advise.
Yes. Autism presents differently in many women, and this has historically led to underdiagnosis. Our doctors are aware of how autism presents across genders and will assess your history accordingly.
