LIPOMA REMOVAL
Soft fatty lumps removed whole by a consultant plastic surgeon, under local anaesthetic. From £995.
A lipoma is a benign tumour of adipose tissue, a soft, mobile, slow-growing fatty lump beneath the skin. Removal means excising the lipoma in one piece, within its capsule.
Also known as: fatty lump removal, lipoma excision, lipoma surgery.
A lipoma is a benign growth of fat cells under the skin, and it is one of the most common lumps there is: soft, movable, slow-growing, and almost always harmless. Harmless does not mean you have to keep it. Most people have one removed because it catches on clothing, sits somewhere it gets knocked, has grown enough to be obvious, or simply because they would rather not have a lump. Any of those is a good enough reason. All procedures on this page are for adults aged 18 and over.

Why a lipoma should be ASSESSED FIRST

Lipomas are benign. The reason for assessing one is that not everything that feels like a lipoma is one.
A classic lipoma is soft, rubbery, moves freely under the skin, and grows very slowly. They favour the shoulders, back, arms and thighs; they tend to run in families, and having more than one is common. When a lump has all of those features, a surgeon can be confident. When it does not, the honest answer is that it needs a proper look.
Features that change the conversation include a lump that is firm rather than soft, fixed to the tissue underneath rather than movable, growing quickly, painful, or deep or unusually large. None of those means something sinister, and the vast majority turn out to be entirely benign, but they are why we examine before we operate and send tissue to the laboratory when warranted.
When should you get a FATTY LUMP SEEN?
You are not obligated to remove a lipoma, but there are good reasons to have one evaluated.

It is growing.
particularly if it has changed noticeably over a few months.
It is painful or tender.
which is not typical for a simple lipoma.
It feels firm.
or fixed to the tissue underneath rather than moving freely.
It catches.
or gets knocked on a waistband, strap, collar or the back of a chair.
Several are common
and worth a conversation rather than a worry.
You simply want it gone.
Appearance is a legitimate reason, and we will not make you justify it.

How much does LIPOMA REMOVAL COST?
Lipoma removal is £995 for the first lipoma, and £300 for each additional lipoma removed in the same visit, which is far more economical than separate appointments. We confirm your price in writing after your consultation. Size and depth determine the procedure: a small superficial lipoma on an arm is straightforward, while a large deep one on the back takes longer.

Lipoma removal QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
No. Lipomas are benign growths of fat cells. The reason we assess one is that not every soft lump is a lipoma, and a lump that is firm, fixed, painful or growing quickly deserves a proper look, which is why we examine before we operate.
Not reliably. Despite interest in injections, creams and other non-surgical methods, none reliably removes a lipoma because they leave the capsule and fat cells behind, and it tends to return. Creams and home kits do not work and can damage the skin. For a definitive result, the lump has to be removed surgically, whole.
Usually shorter than the lump is wide, because fat compresses and a lipoma can be delivered through an opening smaller than its diameter. Larger and deeper ones need more. You are told what to expect before you agree.
A lipoma sits deeper, feels softer and more rubbery, and slides away under your fingers. A cyst sits in the skin, feels firmer, and often has a small dark dot on the surface where it connects. Cysts can get infected; lipomas essentially do not. Either way, we can assess it in seconds. See our cyst removal page for that.
Sometimes. The NHS removes lipomas that are painful, growing or causing functional problems. It does not routinely remove ones that are present but not causing problems. We will tell you honestly if we think yours would qualify.
The exact cause is not fully understood. They tend to run in families and become more common in middle age, and they are not caused by anything you have done.
Not if it came out whole, which is the aim. Recurrence usually means fat cells were left behind, which is the risk when a lipoma is broken up rather than removed intact, or reduced by liposuction rather than excised.
The anaesthetic stings briefly. After that, you should feel pressure rather than pain, and you can ask for more anaesthetic at any point. Aching for a few days afterwards is normal.
Having several is common. Whether to remove all of them, some, or only the ones that bother you is a conversation, and it is far more economical to do more than one in a visit: £995 for the first and £300 for each additional lipoma in the same session.
Assessment appointments are usually available the same week, and often the same day.
