HGV Medical Requirements FOR CAMBRIDGE AREA DRIVERS

HGV Medical Requirements FOR CAMBRIDGE AREA DRIVERS
Cambridgeshire and the wider East of England support a significant HGV and LGV driver population, serving agricultural logistics, distribution hubs along the A14 corridor, and freight routes connecting the region to the Midlands, London and the ports. All Group 2 licence holders face stricter medical standards than car drivers.
A D4 medical is required when applying for a first HGV or LGV licence; when renewing (every five years until age 45, every five years from 45 to 65, then annually from 65); if the DVLA requests one following a health change; or if an employer requires a periodic health check.
A GMC-registered doctor must carry out the examination. No NHS GP referral is needed. Our Cambridge clinic offers same-day appointments with no waiting list. We see drivers from across Cambridgeshire and neighbouring counties, and we complete and sign your D4 form on the day.
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 is the DVLA’s official medical report for Group 2 licences. Your doctor completes and signs it at your Cambridge appointment. You keep a copy and send the original to the DVLA with your licence application or renewal.
Vision. A minimum acuity of 6/9 in the better eye and 6/12 in the other is required, with or without corrective lenses. Field of vision must also meet Group 2 standards.
Blood pressure. Readings must be below 180/100 mmHg at the time of examination. A reading at or above this level may require treatment before the licence can be issued.
Cardiovascular and neurological history. Conditions including angina, previous heart attacks, seizures, blackouts and TIAs are assessed. Some conditions require a specified symptom-free period before a licence can be granted.
Other health conditions. Diabetes, sleep apnoea, renal disease and certain psychiatric conditions are relevant to Group 2 standards and documented accurately on the form.

Preparing for Your Cambridge HGV MEDICAL

Preparing for Your Cambridge HGV MEDICAL
To help your appointment run without delay, bring the following to our Cambridge clinic:
Your current driving licence, including the paper counterpart if applicable.
A list of your regular medication, with the dose and the prescribing doctor’s name.
Your glasses or contact lenses, if you use them for driving.
Details of any conditions already declared to the DVLA.
Your D4 form if you have downloaded it from gov.uk, though we can provide one at the appointment.
If a condition may affect your Group 2 fitness, such as diabetes, a previous cardiac condition or a neurological history, mention this when booking. Your doctor may need additional time and might ask for a recent specialist letter.
For working drivers, timing your renewal carefully is worthwhile. We recommend booking at least four weeks before your licence expires to give the DVLA time to process your application after you submit your D4 form.
