HGV Medical Requirements FOR DERBY DRIVERS

HGV Medical Requirements FOR DERBY DRIVERS
Derby and the surrounding East Midlands region sit close to major logistics infrastructure, with East Midlands Airport and its freight operations, the A38 and M1 corridors, and distribution operations in Nottingham and Burton upon Trent all generating significant demand for qualified HGV and LGV drivers. All Group 2 licence holders face stricter medical standards than car drivers.
A D4 medical is required when applying for a first HGV or LGV licence; when renewing (every five years until age 45, every five years from 45 to 65, then annually from 65); if the DVLA requests one following a health change; or if an employer requires a periodic health check.
A GMC-registered doctor must carry out the examination. No NHS GP referral is needed. Our Derby clinic offers same-day appointments with no waiting list, and we complete and sign your D4 form on the day.
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 is the DVLA’s official medical examination report for Group 2 licences. Your doctor completes and signs it during your Derby appointment. You keep a copy and send the original to the DVLA with your licence application or renewal.
Vision. A minimum acuity of 6/9 in the better eye and 6/12 in the other is required, with or without corrective lenses. Field of vision must meet Group 2 standards.
Blood pressure. Readings must be below 180/100 mmHg at examination. Results at or above this level may require treatment before the licence is issued.
Cardiovascular and neurological history. Conditions such as angina, previous heart attacks, seizures, blackouts and TIAs are assessed. Some require a specified symptom-free period before a licence can be granted.
Other health conditions. Diabetes, sleep apnoea, renal disease and certain psychiatric conditions are relevant to Group 2 standards and recorded accurately on the form.

Preparing for Your Derby HGV MEDICAL

Preparing for Your Derby HGV MEDICAL
To help your appointment run smoothly, bring the following to our Derby clinic:
Your current driving licence, including the paper counterpart if you have one.
A list of any regular medication, including the dose and the name of the prescribing doctor.
Your glasses or contact lenses, if you use them for driving.
Details of any conditions already declared to the DVLA.
Your D4 form if downloaded from gov.uk, though we can provide this at the appointment.
If a condition may affect your Group 2 fitness, such as controlled diabetes, a previous heart condition or a neurological history, let us know when booking. Your doctor may need a little more time and may ask you to bring a recent specialist letter.
For working drivers, timing your renewal carefully is worthwhile. Booking at least four weeks before your licence expires gives the DVLA time to process your application after you submit your D4 form.
