HGV Medical Requirements FOR MANCHESTER DRIVERS

HGV Medical Requirements FOR MANCHESTER DRIVERS

The North West has one of the largest HGV and LGV driver populations outside London. Trafford Park, one of the UK’s major industrial estates, sits within the Greater Manchester area and employs thousands of logistics workers. The M60 orbital motorway and the M6, M61 and M62 corridors generate significant freight traffic in and out of the region. All Group 2 licence holders face stricter medical standards than car drivers.

A D4 medical is required when applying for a first HGV or LGV licence; when renewing (every five years until age 45, every five years from 45 to 65, then annually from 65); if the DVLA requests one following a health change; or if an employer requires a periodic health check.

A GMC-registered doctor must carry out the examination. No NHS GP referral is needed. Our Manchester clinic offers same-day appointments with no waiting list, and we complete and sign your D4 form on the day.

The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED

The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED

The D4 is the DVLA’s official medical report for Group 2 licences. Your doctor completes and signs it at your Manchester appointment. You keep a copy and submit the original to the DVLA with your licence application or renewal.

Vision. You need a minimum acuity of 6/9 in the better eye and 6/12 in the other, with or without corrective lenses. Field of vision must also meet Group 2 standards.

Blood pressure. Readings must be below 180/100 mmHg at the time of examination. A reading at or above this level may require treatment before the licence can be issued.

Cardiovascular and neurological history. Conditions such as angina, previous heart attacks, seizures, blackouts and TIAs are assessed. Some conditions require a symptom-free period before a licence can be granted.

Other health conditions. Diabetes, sleep apnoea, renal disease and certain psychiatric conditions are relevant to Group 2 standards and documented accurately on the form.

Preparing for Your Manchester HGV MEDICAL

To help your appointment run without delay, bring the following to our Manchester clinic:

    • Your current driving licence, including the paper counterpart if you still have one.
    • A list of your regular medication, with the dose and the prescribing doctor’s name.
    • Your glasses or contact lenses, if you use them for driving.
    • Details of any conditions already declared to the DVLA.
    • Your D4 form if downloaded from gov.uk, though we provide one at the appointment if needed.

If a condition may affect your Group 2 fitness, such as diabetes, a previous cardiac condition or a neurological history, mention this when booking. Your doctor may need additional time and might ask for a recent specialist letter.

Timing matters for professional drivers. We recommend booking your examination at least four weeks before your licence expires to give the DVLA time to process your renewal after you submit your D4 form.
