HGV Medical Requirements FOR NORTH EAST DRIVERS

HGV Medical Requirements FOR NORTH EAST DRIVERS
The North East has a significant HGV and LGV driver population, serving logistics operations along the A1(M) and A19 corridors, the Port of Tyne, and distribution hubs in Gateshead, Washington and Sunderland. All Group 2 licence holders face stricter medical standards than car drivers.
A D4 medical is required when applying for a first HGV or LGV licence; when renewing (every five years until age 45, every five years from 45 to 65, then annually from 65); if the DVLA requests one following a health change; or if an employer requires a periodic health check.
A GMC-registered doctor must carry out the examination. No NHS GP referral is needed. Our Newcastle clinic offers same-day appointments with no waiting list. We see drivers from across Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham, and Northumberland, and we complete and sign your D4 form on the day.
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 is the DVLA’s official medical report for Group 2 licences. Your doctor completes and signs it during your Newcastle appointment. You keep a copy and send the original to the DVLA with your licence application or renewal.
Vision. A minimum acuity of 6/9 in the better eye and 6/12 in the other is required, with or without corrective lenses. Field of vision must meet Group 2 standards.
Blood pressure. Readings must be below 180/100 mmHg at the time of examination. A reading at or above this level may require treatment before the licence can be issued.
Cardiovascular and neurological history. Conditions such as angina, previous heart attacks, seizures, blackouts and TIAs are assessed carefully. Some conditions require a specified symptom-free period before a licence can be granted.
Other health conditions. Diabetes, sleep apnoea, renal disease and certain psychiatric conditions are relevant to Group 2 standards and documented accurately on the form.

Preparing for Your Newcastle HGV MEDICAL

Preparing for Your Newcastle HGV MEDICAL
To help your appointment run without delay, bring the following to our Newcastle clinic:
Your current driving licence, including the paper counterpart if applicable.
A list of your regular medication, including the dose and the prescribing doctor’s name.
Your glasses or contact lenses, if you use them for driving. Details of any conditions already declared to the DVLA.
Your D4 form if you have already downloaded it from gov.uk, though we provide one at the appointment. If a condition may affect your Group 2 fitness, such as diabetes, a previous heart condition or a neurological history, mention this when booking. Your doctor may need a little more time and could ask for a recent specialist letter.
If you're a working driver, book at least four weeks before your licence expires. DVLA processing takes time after you submit your D4 form, and you should not be in a position where your licence lapses while renewal is in progress.
