HGV Medical Requirements FOR OXFORD AREA DRIVERS

HGV Medical Requirements FOR OXFORD AREA DRIVERS
Oxfordshire and the South Midlands are home to a significant HGV and LGV driver population, serving logistics operations along the M40 and A34 corridors, distribution sites around Didcot and Bicester, and freight routes into and out of the South East. All Group 2 licence holders face stricter medical standards than car drivers.
A D4 medical is required when applying for a first HGV or LGV licence; when renewing (every five years until age 45, every five years from 45 to 65, then annually from 65); if the DVLA requests one following a health change; or if an employer requires a periodic health check as a condition of employment.
The examination must be carried out by a GMC-registered doctor. No NHS GP referral is needed. Our Oxford clinic offers same-day appointments with no waiting list, and we complete and sign your D4 form on the day.
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 Medical Form EXPLAINED
The D4 is the DVLA’s official medical examination report for Group 2 licences. Your doctor completes and signs it at your Oxford appointment. You keep a copy and send the original to the DVLA with your licence application or renewal.
Vision. A minimum acuity of 6/9 in the better eye and 6/12 in the other is required, with or without corrective lenses. Field of vision must also meet Group 2 standards.
Blood pressure. Readings must be below 180/100 mmHg at the time of examination. A reading at or above this threshold may require treatment before the licence is issued.
Cardiovascular and neurological history. Conditions including angina, previous heart attacks, seizures, blackouts and TIAs are assessed carefully. Some conditions require a symptom-free period before a licence can be granted.
Other health conditions. Diabetes, sleep apnoea, renal disease and certain psychiatric conditions are relevant to Group 2 standards and documented accurately on the form.

Preparing for Your Oxford HGV MEDICAL

Preparing for Your Oxford HGV MEDICAL
To help your appointment run smoothly, bring the following to our Oxford clinic:
Your current driving licence, including the paper counterpart if applicable.
A list of your regular medication, including the dose and the prescribing doctor’s name.
Your glasses or contact lenses, if you use them for driving.
Details of any conditions already declared to the DVLA.
Your D4 form if downloaded from gov.uk, though we provide one at the appointment if not.
If a condition may affect your Group 2 fitness, such as diabetes, a previous heart condition or a neurological history, mention this when booking. Your doctor may need additional time and could ask for a recent letter from your specialist.
For professional drivers, we recommend booking your examination at least four weeks before your licence expires. This gives the DVLA enough time to process your renewal after you submit your D4 form.
