Private PSA Test and Prostate Health Check
Fast results, explained by a doctor. PSA tests from £[X].
A private PSA blood test measures the level of prostate-specific antigen in your blood, helping to assess the health of your prostate gland. PSA testing is used in the investigation of prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis. At our clinics across the UK, results are usually available within 24 to 48 hours and are always explained by a doctor. No GP referral is needed.

What is a PSA Test and WHO SHOULD HAVE ONE?
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by both normal and abnormal prostate cells. A PSA blood test measures the concentration of this protein in your blood. A raised PSA level does not automatically mean cancer is present, but it is a useful indicator that further investigation may be needed.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with around 55,000 diagnoses each year. Most cases develop slowly and can be managed effectively when caught early.
PSA testing is not routinely offered on the NHS to men without symptoms, which means many men choose to arrange a private PSA test for peace of mind or earlier detection.

- You should consider a private PSA blood test if you are:
- A man aged 50 or over.
- A man of Black African or Black Caribbean heritage aged 45 or over, as this group has a higher risk.
- Any man with a first-degree relative who has had prostate cancer.
- Experiencing urinary symptoms that haven't been investigated yet.
- Concerned about your prostate health and want a prompt, clear result.
- No GP referral is needed to book.
PSA Test Results: WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN?
PSA Test Results: WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN?
PSA is measured in nanograms per millilitre of blood (ng/mL). There is no single threshold that definitively rules prostate cancer in or out, but general reference ranges help your doctor interpret your result in context.
As a guide:
- A PSA below 3 ng/mL is considered normal for most men, though age-adjusted ranges apply.
- A PSA between 3 and 10 ng/mL is borderline elevated and may warrant further investigation.
- A PSA above 10 ng/mL is more likely to indicate a prostate condition requiring prompt assessment.
It is important to understand that PSA can be raised by causes other than prostate cancer. These include benign prostatic hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate), prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate), urinary tract infection, recent vigorous exercise and recent ejaculation.
This is why your result must always be interpreted by a doctor who can consider your full clinical picture, not simply read from a chart. At our clinics, a doctor reviews and explains every PSA result and advises whether further action is needed and what that action involves.

Symptoms That May Mean You SHOULD BOOK A PSA TEST
Symptoms That May Mean You SHOULD BOOK A PSA TEST
While many men book a private PSA test for routine screening without symptoms, some signs make testing especially important. If you are experiencing any of the following, a PSA blood test is a sensible first step.
Urinary symptoms that may be linked to the prostate:
- Needing to urinate more frequently, particularly at night.
- Difficulty starting to urinate or a weak, interrupted urine stream.
- Feeling like you haven't fully emptied your bladder.
- Urgency, where the need to urinate comes on suddenly and is difficult to control.
- Discomfort or pain during urination.
Other symptoms that may be associated with prostate disease:
- Blood in the urine or semen.
- Pain in the lower back, hips, pelvis, or upper thighs that has no obvious cause.
- Unexplained erectile dysfunction.
These symptoms do not confirm that prostate cancer or any other prostate condition is present. Many have straightforward explanations. They do confirm that an assessment is worthwhile. A private PSA blood test is a fast, accessible starting point. No GP referral is needed to book.

PSA Test: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A PSA test is a blood test that measures prostate-specific antigen levels in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland, and elevated levels can be an indicator of prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostatitis. The test is simple, quick and requires only a small blood sample.
Men aged 50 and over, men of Black African or Black Caribbean heritage aged 45 and over, and men with a first-degree family history of prostate cancer are particularly encouraged to consider PSA testing. Men experiencing urinary symptoms or any other prostate-related concerns should also consider booking a test, regardless of age.
You should avoid ejaculation for at least 48 hours before your PSA test, as this can temporarily raise PSA levels. You should also avoid vigorous exercise, particularly cycling, for 48 hours beforehand. If you have had a urinary tract infection recently, your doctor may recommend waiting until it has cleared before testing. Your clinician will advise you on preparation when you book.
Private PSA blood tests start from £[X]. Full pricing, including any follow-up consultation fees, is available on our pricing page. There are no hidden fees.
This depends on your age, your risk factors and the result of your previous test. Your doctor will advise on the appropriate interval based on your individual circumstances. Men at higher risk, such as those with a family history of prostate cancer, may benefit from more frequent testing.
If your PSA is above the expected range, your doctor will discuss the likely causes with you and advise on appropriate next steps. These may include a repeat PSA test after a short interval, further blood tests, an MRI scan of the prostate, or a referral to a urologist. The right course of action depends on your PSA level, symptoms, and clinical history.
A PSA test is not a definitive prostate cancer test. A raised PSA level indicates that further investigation may be needed, but it does not confirm cancer. Similarly, a normal PSA level does not completely rule out prostate cancer. It is one part of a broader clinical assessment and should always be interpreted by a doctor in the context of your symptoms and risk factors.
A raised PSA does not automatically mean you have prostate cancer. PSA levels can be elevated due to a non-cancerous enlarged prostate, prostatitis, urinary tract infection, recent vigorous exercise or recent ejaculation. Your doctor will explain your result and advise whether further investigation, such as an MRI scan or referral to a urologist, is needed.
Results are usually available within 24 to 48 hours of your blood test. They will be reviewed by one of our doctors and explained to you clearly, with advice on any next steps. Results are never sent to you without context or explanation.
No. You can book a private PSA blood test at our clinics directly, without a referral from your NHS GP. Simply choose a time online or call us.
Home PSA test kits are available, but they do not include clinical interpretation of your result. A private PSA test at our clinic includes a blood test taken by a trained clinician, accurate laboratory processing and a doctor’s review and explanation of your result, giving you a more complete picture of your prostate health.
