Pre-Employment Medicals PRIVATELY IN BIRMINGHAM
Pre-Employment Medicals PRIVATELY IN BIRMINGHAM
Pre-employment medicals are one of the most common reasons people attend our Edgbaston clinic. Birmingham’s employment base covers a wide range of industries: logistics and distribution along the M6 corridor, healthcare, manufacturing, construction, and professional services across the city. Many of these roles require confirmation of fitness to work before a new starter is formally offered a position.
A pre-employment medical at PMC includes a review of role-relevant medical history, a physical examination where required, and a written report assessing fitness for the specific position. Reports are produced in a format that meets standard HR and occupational health requirements.
Common reasons Birmingham employers request pre-employment medicals:
- Safety-critical and manual handling roles in manufacturing and logistics.
- Healthcare positions with patient contact or manual handling requirements.
- Roles involving operation of heavy plant or machinery.
- Positions where night work or shift patterns apply from day one.
Same-day appointments are available, and we issue reports after the assessment.
Return to Work and FITNESS-FOR-WORK ASSESSMENTS
Return to Work and FITNESS-FOR-WORK ASSESSMENTS
A return-to-work assessment is carried out when an employee has been absent due to illness or injury and is ready to come back. The assessment establishes whether the individual is fit to return, on what terms, and whether any temporary or permanent workplace adjustments are appropriate.
An employer requests a fitness-for-work assessment when they need an independent clinical view of whether an existing employee can carry out their current role. This is most commonly commissioned when an employee has a long-term condition, has had a workplace accident, or when their capacity to work has changed significantly.
Both assessments produce a written report that sets out a clear fitness-for-work determination, any recommended adjustments, and the clinical reasoning behind those conclusions. The report supports the employer’s HR and management process but does not make employment decisions.
Our Birmingham GPs produce reports that meet the standards expected by HR teams, employment solicitors, and, where relevant, Employment Tribunal proceedings.
Management Referrals FOR BIRMINGHAM EMPLOYERS

Management Referrals FOR BIRMINGHAM EMPLOYERS
A management referral is an occupational health assessment an employer commissions when a member of staff’s health affects their attendance, performance, or ability to fulfil their role.
Birmingham employers commission management referrals when managing long-term sickness absence, when considering adjustments under the Equality Act 2010, or when an employee has raised a health concern that affects their capacity.
Our GMC-registered GPs approach every management referral with clinical independence. The report sets out findings and recommendations based solely on the clinical assessment. It does not advocate for the employer or the employee.
What we can assess:
- Fitness for the specific role and working environment.
- Whether a health condition amounts to a disability under the Equality Act 2010.
- Reasonable adjustments that could support a return to or continuation of work.
- Whether an employee is likely to recover, and within what timeframe.
- Recommendations for ongoing support or referral to specialist services.
Reports are issued in writing and are suitable for use in HR proceedings and Employment Tribunal documentation.

Occupational Health Assessments in Birmingham: FAQs
An occupational health assessment is a clinical review of an employee’s health in relation to their work. At PMC’s Birmingham clinic, GMC-registered GPs carry out assessments. The assessment results in a written report setting out a fitness-for-work determination and any recommended adjustments. It is not an NHS service, and no NHS referral is needed.
Same-day appointments are often available at our Edgbaston clinic. You can book online for instant confirmation or call us to arrange an appointment that suits you.
An employer cannot legally compel attendance, but refusing an assessment can affect how an absence or adjustments decision is managed. Where an employer has commissioned the assessment, attending gives your doctor the opportunity to consider your health circumstances fully before the employer makes any decisions.
Most pre-employment medicals take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the role and whether a physical examination is included. You will receive a written report following the appointment.
