Pre-Employment Medicals IN CAMBRIDGE
Pre-Employment Medicals IN CAMBRIDGE
Pre-employment medicals are one of the most frequently requested services at our Cambridge clinic. Cambridge’s employment base is built around biotech and life sciences (the Cambridge Cluster is one of the largest life sciences concentrations in Europe), the University of Cambridge and its affiliated research institutions, technology companies, and healthcare. Many of these roles require a health screen before a formal offer.
A pre-employment medical at PMC Cambridge includes a review of role-relevant medical history, physical examination where required, and a written report assessing fitness for the specific position. Reports are produced in a format suitable for biotech, research, and standard HR requirements.
Common reasons Cambridge employers request pre-employment medicals:
- Biotech and life sciences roles involving laboratory or research work.
- University and research institution positions with specific fitness requirements.
- Technology roles requiring sustained concentration or shift-based work patterns.
- Healthcare and NHS trust positions with patient contact requirements.
Same-day appointments are available, and reports are issued following the assessment.
Return to Work and FITNESS-FOR-WORK ASSESSMENTS
Return to Work and FITNESS-FOR-WORK ASSESSMENTS
A return-to-work assessment is carried out when an employee has been absent due to illness or injury and is ready to come back. It establishes whether they are fit to return, on what terms, and whether any temporary or permanent adjustments are appropriate.
An employer requests a fitness-for-work assessment when they need an independent clinical view of whether an existing employee can carry out their current role. This most commonly arises when an employee has a long-term condition, has been involved in a workplace incident, or when their capacity to work has changed.
Both assessments produce a written report covering the fitness-for-work determination, any recommended adjustments, and the clinical reasoning. The report informs the employer’s HR process but does not make employment decisions.
Our Cambridge GPs produce reports to the standards expected by biotech, university, and corporate HR teams, employment solicitors, and, where relevant, Employment Tribunal proceedings.
Occupational Health for BIOTECH and TECHNOLOGY Employers

Occupational Health for BIOTECH and TECHNOLOGY Employers
Cambridge’s concentration of biotech, life sciences, and technology employers creates occupational health requirements that are often more specific than those in general commercial settings.
Laboratory-based roles in biotech and life sciences may involve exposure to biological or chemical agents, triggering health surveillance obligations under COSHH regulations. Technology roles with sustained screen-based work, irregular hours, or high cognitive demands can also prompt management referrals or fitness-for-work reviews.
Pre-employment health screens are standard for many Cambridge Cluster companies before laboratory or research staff begin work. Management referrals from technology and research employers typically focus on cognitive or psychological health in relation to role demands.
Our Cambridge clinic supports pre-employment medicals, COSHH health surveillance, and management referrals for biotech, life sciences, and technology employers across Cambridge and the surrounding area. Contact us to discuss requirements specific to your organisation.
