Who Are Private ADHD ASSESSMENTS FOR?
Who Are Private ADHD ASSESSMENTS FOR?
Private ADHD assessments are for adults who suspect they have ADHD and want a thorough, timely evaluation from a qualified doctor, without waiting years on an NHS list.
NHS ADHD waiting times in England now run to two years or more in many areas, and considerably longer in some. Many adults have been on a waiting list since before the pandemic and are still without a diagnosis. Others have tried to access assessment through the Right to Choose pathway and found it restricted or unavailable in their area.
Our private ADHD assessments are suitable for:
- Adults who have suspected ADHD for years but have never been formally assessed.
- Those referred by their GP but facing long NHS waiting lists.
- People whose ADHD symptoms affect their work, relationships, or daily life.
- Adults who were assessed as children but want a formal adult diagnosis on record.
- Anyone who needs a written diagnostic report for employment or education.
- Those already diagnosed privately who want medication initiated or reviewed.
At the end of your assessment, your doctor will give you a clear diagnosis and a plan for next steps, including medication where clinically appropriate.

What Happens at a PRIVATE ADHD ASSESSMENT?
What Happens at a PRIVATE ADHD ASSESSMENT?
Your ADHD assessment is a structured clinical appointment with a private doctor experienced in adult ADHD. The appointment runs longer than a standard GP slot and follows a recognised diagnostic process.
Your doctor will begin by gathering a detailed history of your symptoms, how long you have experienced them, how they affect your daily life and whether they were present in childhood. This is an important part of the process, as ADHD must have been present before the age of 12 to meet diagnostic criteria under NICE guidelines.
Your doctor will use validated clinical tools during the appointment. These include the DIVA 2.0 structured diagnostic interview and rating scales such as the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales, which assess the full range of ADHD presentations including inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive and combined types.
By the end of the appointment, you will have a clear diagnosis or a direction for next steps. If ADHD is confirmed and medication is clinically appropriate, your doctor can initiate a private prescription at the same visit. A written diagnostic report can be arranged for employment, education or legal purposes.

Private vs NHS ADHD Assessment: WHAT CHANGES?
Private vs NHS ADHD Assessment: WHAT CHANGES?
NHS ADHD waiting lists in England are among the longest of any mental health service. The average wait from GP referral to a first ADHD clinic appointment now runs to two years or more in many areas, and in some parts of England it is considerably longer. The Right to Choose pathway, which allowed patients to request assessment from an independent provider funded by the NHS, has been restricted in a number of areas since 2024.
Private ADHD assessment gives you access to a qualified doctor within days. Your assessment follows the same clinical standards as an NHS assessment, using validated diagnostic tools and meeting NICE criteria for ADHD diagnosis in adults.
A private ADHD diagnosis is accepted by most NHS trusts and GP practices for shared care, which allows your GP to take over prescribing of ADHD medication on the NHS once a private doctor has initiated it. We recommend confirming this with your GP and local ICB before booking.
Private ADHD assessments are covered by most major health insurance policies. Self-paying patients do not need a referral.
If you need a written diagnostic report for an employer, a university, an Education, Health and Care Plan application or a legal matter, your doctor can provide one at the same visit.

In most cases, yes. Most NHS GP practices and ICBs will accept a private ADHD diagnosis for shared care, allowing your GP to take over prescribing on the NHS after a private doctor has initiated medication. We recommend confirming this with your GP before booking, as shared care arrangements vary by area.

Yes. We can arrange a written diagnostic report for use with an employer, a university, an EHCP application, a professional body, or a legal matter. Please mention this when booking.
A childhood diagnosis does not automatically carry into adulthood for prescription purposes. If you were assessed as a child but have no current adult diagnosis on record, a private adult assessment will give you a formal diagnosis and allow medication to be prescribed.
