Understanding HPV: WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT SPREADS

Understanding HPV: WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT SPREADS
Human papillomavirus is a group of more than 100 related viruses, around 40 of which can infect the genital area. HPV is passed through skin-to-skin sexual contact, including vaginal, anal and oral sex. It does not require penetrative sex to be transmitted and can spread even when no visible warts are present.
Most people who acquire HPV will never know they have it. In most cases, the immune system clears the virus naturally within one to two years. However, some strains persist and cause visible symptoms or, with high-risk types, increase the risk of certain cancers.
HPV falls into two broad categories:
- Low-risk HPV (types 6 and 11): responsible for around 90 per cent of genital warts, causing visible growths but not cancer
- High-risk HPV (types 16 and 18 and others): associated with cervical, anal, throat, vulvar and penile cancers, and usually causing no visible symptoms whatsoever
Knowing which HPV type is present matters. Private HPV DNA testing at our clinics identifies high-risk strains, giving you the information needed to take the right next steps.

Genital Warts Symptoms: WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR
Genital Warts Symptoms: WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR
Genital warts are caused by low-risk strains of HPV, primarily types 6 and 11. They are among the most commonly diagnosed conditions at sexual health clinics in the UK and, while not dangerous in themselves, can be a source of significant anxiety and discomfort.
Genital warts typically appear as small, soft, flesh-coloured or slightly pink growths on or around the genitals, anus, upper thighs or groin. They may appear singly or in clusters and can range from flat to raised, smooth to irregular. Some are barely visible to the naked eye.
Possible signs to look out for include:
- Soft, painless lumps on or around the genitals, anus or groin.
- Clusters of growths that may resemble a cauliflower in texture.
- Itching, irritation, or discomfort in the affected area.
- Bleeding during sex when warts are located on the cervix or inside the rectum.
- Growths in the mouth or throat following oral sexual contact, though this is rare.
It is important to note that high-risk HPV strains, which are associated with an increased cancer risk, do not cause visible warts. They are typically entirely asymptomatic and are identified only through HPV DNA testing. A private consultation at our clinics can assess both possibilities.

HPV and Genital Warts: TREATMENT OPTIONS

HPV and Genital Warts: TREATMENT OPTIONS
There is no cure for the HPV virus itself, but genital warts can be effectively treated and the risks associated with high-risk HPV can be monitored and managed with private clinical support.
Treatment for genital warts depends on the number, size, location and appearance of the warts, and your doctor will advise on the most suitable approach at your appointment:
- Topical treatments: podophyllotoxin cream or gel and imiquimod cream are the most commonly prescribed home-use options, applied directly to the warts over a course of weeks.
- Cryotherapy: warts are frozen using liquid nitrogen during a clinic appointment, usually requiring one or more sessions depending on their extent.
- Surgical removal: available for persistent, larger or treatment-resistant warts.
HPV vaccination offers protection against the strains most responsible for genital warts and high-risk cancers. Gardasil 9 covers types 6, 11, 16, 18 and five further high-risk strains. Private vaccination is available for those who missed the NHS programme or want broader protection.
Genital warts can recur after successful treatment. Your doctor will provide follow-up care and guidance on reducing the risk of recurrence.
Frequently Asked Questions: GENITAL WARTS AND HPV
HPV is the virus; genital warts are one possible consequence. Most people with HPV never develop visible warts. Genital warts are caused specifically by low-risk HPV strains, types 6 and 11. High-risk strains such as types 16 and 18 do not cause warts but are associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. You can have HPV, including high-risk HPV, with no symptoms at all.
Visible genital warts should be treated to reduce discomfort, prevent spread and manage recurrence. If you have been told you carry high-risk HPV, monitoring and follow-up are important even without visible symptoms, as persistent high-risk HPV requires ongoing clinical attention. Your doctor will advise on the most appropriate plan for your circumstances.
If you have genital warts, your recent partners should be aware so they can seek assessment. As HPV is so common and transmission is possible even without visible warts, it may not be possible to trace a specific source. Your doctor will advise on partner notification and what your contacts need to know.
Yes. Gardasil 9, which protects against nine strains of HPV including those responsible for most genital warts and most HPV-related cancers, is available at our private clinics. It is recommended for those who have not been previously vaccinated, and can provide meaningful protection for adults who missed the NHS programme.
Yes. HPV DNA testing can identify whether high-risk strains of HPV are present. This type of testing is used in NHS cervical screening and is also available privately at our clinics. Genital warts caused by low-risk HPV are diagnosed through clinical assessment, as the virus itself does not show up in a standard blood test.
No treatment eliminates the HPV virus, but the immune system clears it naturally in most people, usually within one to two years. Genital warts caused by HPV can be removed through topical treatments, cryotherapy or surgery. Treatment removes the warts but does not guarantee the virus has been fully cleared.
High-risk HPV strains, particularly types 16 and 18, are responsible for the majority of cervical cancers and are also associated with anal, throat, vulvar and penile cancers. The good news is that most people with high-risk HPV do not develop cancer. Regular screening and vaccination significantly reduce that risk.
Yes. No GP referral or letter is required. You can book a private HPV and genital warts consultation directly online or by calling us. Same-day appointments are frequently available and all care is completely confidential.
