What Is Hepatitis B and HOW IS IT TRANSMITTED?

What Is Hepatitis B and HOW IS IT TRANSMITTED?
Hepatitis B is a viral infection caused by the hepatitis B virus, which targets and inflames the liver. It is significantly more infectious than HIV and can survive outside the body for several days, making it one of the more easily transmitted bloodborne infections.
In the UK, hepatitis B is most commonly passed through sexual contact. It can also be transmitted through sharing needles or drug equipment, from a mother to her baby during birth, needlestick injuries, and the use of unsterile tattooing or piercing equipment. It is not transmitted through everyday contact such as sharing food, hugging or coughing.
Most adults clear the virus naturally after exposure and develop lasting immunity. In around five per cent of adult cases, and in a much higher proportion of cases acquired during infancy or childhood, the infection becomes chronic and persists long term.
Groups at higher risk include:
- Men who have sex with men.
- People who inject drugs or share drug equipment.
- Those born in or with close family from high-prevalence regions such as sub-Saharan Africa and East and Southeast Asia.
- Healthcare workers and others with occupational exposure to blood.
- Those with multiple sexual partners.

Hepatitis B Symptoms: WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR
Hepatitis B Symptoms: WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR
Many people with hepatitis B experience no symptoms at all. About one in three people in the acute phase have no noticeable signs, meaning they can transmit the infection without realising it. This is one of the primary reasons hepatitis B so frequently goes undiagnosed.
When symptoms do occur, they typically appear between one and four months after exposure and may include:
- Persistent fatigue and a general sense of being unwell.
- Loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting.
- Abdominal discomfort, particularly on the right side beneath the ribs.
- Joint and muscle pain.
- Fever.
- Jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
- Dark urine and pale or clay-coloured stools.
Symptoms of acute hepatitis B generally resolve within a few weeks in adults who successfully clear the virus.
Chronic hepatitis B is often entirely asymptomatic for years or even decades. Many people discover they have the infection only when liver damage has already developed, through incidental testing or routine health screening. This is why testing matters, especially for anyone in a higher-risk group or with a history of potential exposure.

Hepatitis B: MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT OPTIONS

Hepatitis B: MANAGEMENT AND TREATMENT OPTIONS
No treatment cures acute hepatitis B. The immune system clears the virus naturally in around 95 per cent of adults who acquire it. During the acute phase, the key recommendations are rest, adequate hydration and avoiding alcohol and other substances that place additional stress on the liver.
Chronic hepatitis B, where the infection persists for more than six months, requires ongoing monitoring and, in many cases, antiviral treatment. First-line antivirals, including tenofovir disoproxil and entecavir, suppress viral replication, protect the liver from further damage and significantly reduce the long-term risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Not everyone with chronic hepatitis B will require immediate treatment. The clinical decision depends on viral load, liver function test results, the degree of liver inflammation and any evidence of existing damage. Regular monitoring is essential for all those with a chronic diagnosis.
Vaccination is an important part of hepatitis B prevention and is available privately at our clinics. The hepatitis B vaccine is highly effective and suitable for those who have not previously been immunised, those who need a booster, and those whose immunity has waned after earlier vaccination.
Frequently Asked Questions: HEPATITIS B TESTING
Acute hepatitis B refers to a new infection that has occurred within the past six months. Most adults who acquire hepatitis B clear it during this phase and develop lasting immunity. Chronic hepatitis B is when the infection persists beyond six months, and the immune system has not cleared the virus. Chronic infection carries a long-term risk of liver complications including cirrhosis and liver cancer, which is why ongoing monitoring and management are so important.
A hepatitis B blood test looks for specific markers in the blood. The hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) indicates a current active infection. The surface antibody (anti-HBs) indicates immunity, either from vaccination or natural recovery. The core antibody (anti-HBc) indicates past or present infection. Your doctor will explain what your results mean and what action, if any, is required.
Acute hepatitis B resolves on its own in around 95 per cent of adults without specific treatment. Chronic hepatitis B has no cure at present, but antiviral treatment can suppress the virus effectively, prevent liver damage and allow people to live a healthy life. Newer treatments are in clinical development, and monitoring treatment progress is part of ongoing private care.
If your hepatitis B test is positive, recent sexual partners and anyone with whom you have shared needles or drug equipment should be notified so they can be tested and vaccinated if necessary. Your doctor will advise you on how to approach this sensitively and what information your contacts will need.
Most people with hepatitis B have no symptoms, meaning the only way to know your status is through a blood test. If you have had potential exposure through sexual contact, shared equipment or a medical procedure in a country where hepatitis B is prevalent, testing is the only reliable way to establish whether you are infected, immune or susceptible.
The hepatitis B surface antigen is typically detectable within 1 to 9 weeks after exposure. Testing too early following a potential exposure may miss the infection. Your doctor will advise on the appropriate window period for testing based on when your exposure occurred.
Yes. Private hepatitis B vaccination is available at our clinics. The course involves three doses given over several months and provides strong, long-lasting protection. Vaccination is recommended for anyone in a higher-risk group who has not previously been immunised, as well as those travelling to high-prevalence regions. Your doctor can arrange this at the same appointment as your blood test.
Yes. No GP referral or letter is required. You can book a private hepatitis B test directly online or by calling us. Same-day appointments are frequently available and all care is handled with complete confidentiality.
