What Is Mycoplasma Genitalium and HOW IT IS TESTED

Mycoplasma genitalium is a bacterium that infects the genital and urinary tracts. It spreads through unprotected vaginal or anal sex and is classified as a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

MGen is often described as a hidden STI. Many people carry the infection for months or years without knowing. Left untreated, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, urethritis in men, and long-term complications including fertility problems.

We use a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, the most accurate method available. We collect a urine sample or genital swab and send it to a laboratory for analysis. Our doctors also recommend antibiotic resistance testing alongside your MGen test. This is important because Mycoplasma genitalium has developed significant resistance to commonly prescribed antibiotics. Knowing your resistance profile from the outset means treatment can be targeted, effective, and right the first time.

MGen and Antibiotic Resistance: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

MGen and Antibiotic Resistance: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Mycoplasma genitalium has become one of the most antibiotic-resistant STIs in the UK. Standard antibiotics such as azithromycin, once used as first-line treatment, are now ineffective against a significant proportion of MGen infections due to acquired resistance mutations.

Current UK clinical guidelines recommend antibiotic resistance testing before prescribing any treatment. This means your PCR test should include a resistance assay so your doctor can identify which antibiotics will work for your specific infection.

At our clinics, resistance testing is available alongside your MGen PCR test. If resistance is detected, your doctor will prescribe an appropriate alternative such as moxifloxacin. Getting this right the first time matters because repeated or incorrect antibiotic courses worsen resistance and significantly delay recovery.

If you have already been treated for MGen without improvement, or if symptoms return after treatment, we strongly recommend a resistance-guided test and consultation with one of our doctors. Self-treating or relying on over-the-counter antibiotics is not appropriate for MGen.

Who Should Get Tested for MYCOPLASMA GENITALIUM?

You should consider a Mycoplasma genitalium test if you:

  • Have had unprotected sex with a new or multiple partners.
  • Are experiencing symptoms of urethritis, pelvic pain, or unusual discharge.
  • Have been diagnosed with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and want to confirm the cause.
  • Have recently had chlamydia or gonorrhoea, as co-infections with MGen are possible.
  • Have a partner who has tested positive for MGen.
  • Have completed previous MGen treatment and want to confirm clearance.
  • Are pregnant, as Mycoplasma genitalium has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes including preterm birth.
  • Have no symptoms but want peace of mind as part of a full sexual health screen.

Mycoplasma genitalium testing is not routinely available on the NHS, which means many people are unaware they are infected. A private MGen test with our GMC-registered doctors gives you fast, accurate results and access to resistance-guided treatment, all in one appointment.
