Our Edgbaston clinic AND SURGICAL THEATRE

Your procedure takes place in our own minor operations theatre, not in a consulting room with the lights turned up. It is at 88 Hagley Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B16 8LU, and it is the surgical site for the whole Private Medical Clinic network.

A surgical nurse is with you from the moment you come through to theatre until you leave, which counts for more than it sounds when you are awake for your own operation. Everything is under local anaesthetic as a day case, so there is no general anaesthetic, no overnight stay, and you are home the same day.

Am I suitable, and HOW MANY GRAFTS WILL I NEED?

Am I suitable, and HOW MANY GRAFTS WILL I NEED?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve where it passes through the wrist. It gives numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger; it typically wakes you at night, and people often describe shaking the hand over the side of the bed to get feeling back.

Mild or intermittent symptoms are worth treating conservatively first. A night splint holds the wrist neutral and helps a lot of people, and a steroid injection can settle symptoms and confirm the diagnosis. We will offer those where they are likely to work.

Surgery is the right answer when symptoms are constant rather than intermittent, when the numbness no longer comes and goes, when the muscle at the base of the thumb is wasting, or when splints and injections have not helped. Do not leave constant numbness indefinitely. A nerve compressed long enough does not fully recover even after successful surgery, and that is the one part of this worth acting on. Adults aged 18 and over.

How CARPAL TUNNEL RELEASE WORKS

Minor surgery procedure

How CARPAL TUNNEL RELEASE WORKS

The palm and wrist are numbed with local anaesthetic. A short incision is made in the palm and the transverse carpal ligament, the tight band forming the roof of the tunnel, is divided. That immediately releases the pressure on the median nerve. The skin is closed with sutures.

It takes about fifteen to twenty minutes. You are awake throughout, the hand is completely numb, and there is no general anaesthetic and no overnight stay. You walk out with the hand bandaged and go home the same day.

Night pain often improves within days, which is the change people notice first and value most. Numbness recovers more slowly, over weeks to months, depending on how long the nerve was compressed before surgery.

Realistic results AND THE RECOVERY TIMELINE

  • SAME DAY

Home within the hour, hand bandaged and elevated. Fingers moving straight away.

  • DAYS 1 TO 7

Night pain is often gone already. Keep the dressing dry; use your fingers normally.

  • DAYS 10 TO 14

Sutures out. Light desk work is usually fine from the first week or two.

  • WEEKS 3 TO 6

Grip strength returning. The scar is tender to the touch which is settling.

  • WEEKS 6 TO 12

Back to manual work and full grip. Numbness continues to improve.

  • MONTHS 3 TO 12

Nerve recovery completing. Longstanding numbness may not fully resolve.
