Private Chickenpox Vaccine for Adults and Children
The chickenpox (varicella) vaccine is not part of the routine NHS childhood schedule in the UK, but we offer it privately at all our clinics. We vaccinate adults and children, with same-day appointments and no GP referral needed. Two doses of the varicella vaccine provide around 95% protection. Our clinicians include a pre-vaccination consultation with every appointment and issue a vaccination certificate on the day.

What the Chickenpox Vaccine Covers and WHO IT's FOR
The chickenpox vaccine protects against the varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox and can later reactivate as shingles. We offer it to adults and children at all ten of our UK clinics.

- Adults who have never had chickenpox or the vaccine.
- Children from age one, where parents want private vaccination outside the NHS schedule.
- Healthcare workers, teachers and care staff without documented immunity.
- Adults in contact with newborns, pregnant women or immunocompromised individuals.
- Women planning pregnancy who have no prior immunity.
- Adults whose immunity status is uncertain and who want confirmation before exposure risk increases.
- International residents whose home country offered the vaccine routinely but the NHS does not.
- Adults who have been exposed to chickenpox and want post-exposure protection.
Who Should Get the Chickenpox Vaccine?

Who Should Get the Chickenpox Vaccine?
The chickenpox vaccine is recommended for anyone without documented immunity who is at risk of catching chickenpox or passing it on to others.
Adults are at higher risk of severe chickenpox than children. Complications in adults include bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, encephalitis, and hospitalisation. Adults on immunosuppressive treatments, those with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women face the greatest risks.
The following groups are particularly advised to be vaccinated:
- Healthcare workers, teachers and care workers without prior immunity, who risk exposure through their work and may pass chickenpox to vulnerable patients or pupils.
- Adults who live with or care for someone who is immunocompromised and cannot be vaccinated themselves.
- Women planning a pregnancy who have no documented immunity, as chickenpox in pregnancy carries risks to both mother and unborn child.
- Adults who are unsure whether they have had chickenpox, particularly those born outside the UK where childhood vaccination was more standard.

Chickenpox in Adults: WHY VACCINATION MATTERS
Chickenpox in Adults: WHY VACCINATION MATTERS
Many people assume chickenpox is a mild childhood illness. In adults, it is often more severe and carries a significantly higher risk of complications.
Adults who contract chickenpox for the first time are more likely than children to develop bacterial skin infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis. The illness typically lasts longer in adults and causes more debilitating symptoms. A significant proportion of adults with chickenpox require hospital admission, compared with very few children.
The risks are higher still in specific groups:
Pregnant women who contract chickenpox, particularly in the first 20 weeks, face a risk of fetal varicella syndrome, which can cause scarring, eye damage and developmental problems in the unborn child. Chickenpox acquired close to delivery can cause severe neonatal infection.
Immunocompromised individuals, including those receiving chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients and those with conditions affecting immunity, can develop life-threatening chickenpox.
Vaccination is the most reliable way to prevent chickenpox and avoid these complications.

The Chickenpox Vaccine Schedule: DOSES AND TIMING

The Chickenpox Vaccine Schedule: DOSES AND TIMING
The chickenpox vaccine is given as two separate doses. The second dose is administered four to eight weeks after the first.
Two doses provide around 95 per cent protection against chickenpox. A single dose is considered insufficient for full coverage and offers around 70 to 85 per cent protection.
Post-exposure vaccination: if you have been in close contact with someone who has chickenpox and have no prior immunity, the vaccine can reduce infection severity if given within three to five days of exposure. This is known as post-exposure prophylaxis.
Checking your immunity: if you are unsure whether you have had chickenpox, a blood test (varicella IgG) can confirm your immunity status before vaccination. We can arrange this alongside your appointment.
The chickenpox vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine and is not recommended during pregnancy. Women planning pregnancy should complete the course at least one month before trying to conceive and avoid pregnancy for four weeks after each dose.
Chickenpox Vaccine FAQs
Yes. The chickenpox vaccine is available privately at all of our clinics. It is not on the NHS routine schedule for adults or children in the UK, but there is no restriction on accessing it privately. No referral is needed.
Not routinely. The NHS does not include chickenpox in the UK childhood vaccination schedule. It may be offered on the NHS in specific circumstances, such as to non-immune healthcare workers. For most adults and children, private vaccination is the only route to access it in the UK.
Yes, in some cases. If you have been exposed to chickenpox and have no prior immunity, vaccination within three to five days of exposure can reduce the likelihood or severity of infection. This is called post-exposure prophylaxis. Contact us promptly if this applies to you.
Yes. If you are unsure, a blood test (varicella IgG) can confirm whether you already have immunity. If the test shows no immunity, you can proceed with vaccination. We can arrange the blood test and vaccination at the same clinic visit.
No. The chickenpox vaccine is a live vaccine and is not recommended during pregnancy. Women who are not immune should be vaccinated before becoming pregnant and should avoid pregnancy for four weeks after each dose. If you are already pregnant and not immune, speak to your midwife or GP about monitoring and protective measures.
The varicella vaccine is the clinical name for the chickenpox vaccine. It is a live attenuated vaccine containing a weakened form of the varicella-zoster virus, which prompts the immune system to build immunity without causing the illness itself.
Two doses, given four to eight weeks apart. You need both doses for the highest level of protection. We will book your second dose appointment before you leave your first visit.
Pricing is on our booking page. The vaccine is given as two doses, and a certificate is included with your appointment. Call us if you would like a quote before booking.
Most side effects are mild. The most common are soreness or redness at the injection site and a low-grade fever. About 1 in 25 people develop a mild rash of a few spots within four weeks of the first dose. Serious reactions are rare.
Yes. The varicella IgG test checks for antibodies to the varicella-zoster virus. A positive result means you are likely immune. A negative or equivocal result indicates that vaccination is advisable.
Some protection develops within a week or two of the first dose, but full protection requires both doses. For this reason, complete the course well in advance of any anticipated exposure risk rather than relying on a single dose for last-minute protection.
Yes. We vaccinate children from age one. Many parents choose private vaccination because the NHS does not include it in the routine childhood schedule in the UK, unlike many other countries. Your child will need two doses, four to eight weeks apart.
