Who Should Consider the SHINGLES VACCINE
We offer the Shingrix shingles vaccine to adults at all our clinics, with no referral needed and no waiting for an NHS appointment window.

- Adults aged 50 to 64 who do not yet qualify for the NHS shingles vaccine.
- Adults over 65 who want their vaccine sooner than an NHS slot allows.
- Those who have had shingles before and want to reduce the risk of a further episode.
- Immunocompromised adults for whom Shingrix is the appropriate non-live vaccine option.
- People with diabetes, chronic lung disease or other conditions that raise shingles risk.
- Adults on immunosuppressant medication, after discussion with their specialist.
- Those who need a vaccination certificate for employment or insurance purposes.
- Anyone who wants an unhurried consultation before deciding whether to go ahead.
Private vs NHS Shingles Vaccine: WHAT TO KNOW

Private vs NHS Shingles Vaccine: WHAT TO KNOW
The NHS currently offers the shingles vaccine free of charge to adults aged 65 and to those aged 70 to 79 as a catch-up. Adults who are severely immunosuppressed may also be eligible. Outside these groups, the NHS shingles vaccine is not routinely available.
Private shingles vaccination at our clinics is open to any adult aged 50 and over, regardless of NHS eligibility. The vaccine is most effective when given before immunity begins its natural age-related decline, which is why many adults in their fifties and early sixties choose not to wait until they reach NHS eligibility at 65.
Common reasons patients book privately:
- You are aged 50 to 64 and want protection now rather than waiting years for an NHS offer.
- You want a same-day appointment rather than waiting weeks for an NHS slot.
- You have already had one dose elsewhere and want to complete your second dose at a clinic near you.
- You want a clinician-led consultation to discuss whether vaccination is right for your specific circumstances.

What Is Shingles and WHY DOES VACCINATION MATTER?
What Is Shingles and WHY DOES VACCINATION MATTER?
Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful blistering rash caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus responsible for chickenpox. After a chickenpox infection, the virus lies dormant in the nerve tissue near the spinal cord and brain. Decades later, usually when immunity weakens with age or illness, it can reactivate as shingles.
The rash typically appears as a band of blisters on one side of the body, most often across the torso, neck or face. It is accompanied by significant pain, which can precede the rash by several days. For some, symptoms resolve within two to four weeks. For others, a complication called postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) develops, causing chronic nerve pain that persists for months or years after the rash has healed. PHN affects around one in five people who develop shingles over the age of 50, and the risk rises steeply with age.
Other complications include herpes zoster ophthalmicus, in which the virus affects the eye and can cause lasting vision damage. About one in three people in the UK will develop shingles in their lifetime, with most cases occurring after age 50.

How the Shingles Vaccine Works and WHAT TO EXPECT

How the Shingles Vaccine Works and WHAT TO EXPECT
We administer the Shingrix vaccine, also called the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV). Shingrix is a non-live, adjuvanted vaccine, meaning it contains no live virus and is suitable for people who are immunocompromised or on immunosuppressive medication. This distinguishes it from the older Zostavax vaccine, a live attenuated vaccine that was unsuitable for many at-risk patients and is no longer routinely used.
Shingrix requires two doses, given two to six months apart. Both doses are needed for full protection: the two-dose course delivers around 90 per cent efficacy against shingles in adults over 50, including those over 70, based on clinical trial data published in the New England Journal of Medicine and cited by the JCVI.
Side effects from Shingrix can be more noticeable than with some other vaccines. Sore arm, fatigue, muscle ache, headache and a low-grade fever for one to two days are common, particularly after the second dose. These are expected immune responses and typically resolve within two to three days.
Shingles Vaccine FAQs
Two doses of Shingrix are required for full protection. The second dose is given two to six months after the first. A single dose provides partial protection, but we recommend the full two-dose course for the highest level of efficacy. We manage both appointments and will remind you when the second is due.
The NHS currently offers the shingles vaccine free of charge to adults aged 65 and to those aged 70 to 79 as part of a catch-up programme. Adults who are severely immunosuppressed may also be eligible. If you fall outside these groups, private vaccination at our clinics is the most accessible route.
Shingrix is the recombinant zoster vaccine, now recommended by the JCVI and used across the NHS programme. It contains no live virus, making it suitable for immunocompromised patients. Zostavax, the older live attenuated vaccine, is no longer routinely offered. Shingrix is approximately 90 per cent effective at preventing shingles, compared to around 51 per cent for Zostavax.
Shingrix commonly causes side effects that are more pronounced than many other vaccines. These include soreness, redness and swelling at the injection site, fatigue, muscle ache, headache and, in some cases, a low-grade fever. Symptoms typically last one to two days after the first dose and may be somewhat stronger after the second. Serious reactions are rare. Your clinician will discuss what to expect before going ahead.
Yes. You can have your first dose at any of our ten clinics and your second at a different location if that is more convenient. We will record your first dose at your appointment and coordinate the second dose booking.
It is generally advisable to wait at least four weeks after a significant acute illness, including a chickenpox episode in adulthood, before receiving the shingles vaccine. Your clinician will review your recent health history at your pre-vaccination check and advise on timing.
Yes. We offer private shingles vaccination to adults aged 50 and over. The NHS offers the vaccine free of charge only to those aged 65 and those in the 70 to 79 catch-up group, but private vaccination is available to anyone from 50 onwards, regardless of NHS eligibility.
Yes. Having had shingles does not prevent you from being vaccinated. The vaccine helps reduce the risk of a further episode, which is possible since the varicella-zoster virus remains in the nervous system after any shingles episode. It is generally advisable to wait until the acute episode and any symptoms have fully resolved before vaccinating.
Because Shingrix contains no live virus, it is generally considered the appropriate option for people who are immunocompromised or on immunosuppressive medication, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, and people on long-term corticosteroids. Your clinician will review your individual situation at your pre-vaccination consultation. If you are on active immunosuppressive treatment, it is worth timing the vaccine when your treatment allows for the best immune response.
Studies suggest that protection from the two-dose Shingrix course remains high for at least seven years, and likely longer. Ongoing data collection continues to assess long-term duration. At present, no routine booster is recommended for most adults. Your clinician can advise based on your age, health status and when you were first vaccinated.
In most cases, yes. People on anticoagulants can receive the shingles vaccine, though your clinician will apply pressure to the injection site for a few minutes after administration to minimise bruising. Let us know about any medications when you book so we can advise in advance.
Yes. We issue a vaccination certificate or confirmation letter, including the vaccine name, batch number, and dates of each dose, at each appointment and email it to you as a PDF. Employers, insurers, and occupational health services accept these.
