Who Should Consider the CHOLERA VACCINE
The cholera vaccine is not routinely recommended for all travellers, but is advisable for those heading to high-risk regions with limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

- Aid workers, healthcare workers and volunteers in cholera-endemic or disaster-affected regions.
- Travellers visiting friends and relatives in high-risk parts of South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa or Southeast Asia.
- Backpackers and adventure travellers spending extended time in areas with limited sanitation.
- Those travelling to regions with an active cholera outbreak, as reported by the WHO or UKHSA.
- Travellers with underlying health conditions who are at higher risk from severe gastrointestinal illness.
- Those working in refugee camps or humanitarian settings.
- Long-stay travellers in rural or remote parts of endemic countries.
- Anyone who wants additional protection against traveller’s diarrhoea caused by enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC).
Do You Need the CHOLERA VACCINE FOR YOUR TRIP?

Do You Need the CHOLERA VACCINE FOR YOUR TRIP?
The cholera vaccine is not recommended for all travellers to endemic regions. Most visitors to major tourist destinations in South Asia and Southeast Asia who stay in hotels and eat in established restaurants face a low individual risk. For certain travellers and itineraries, however, vaccination is worth serious consideration.
Your risk is higher if:
- You are travelling to an area with an active cholera outbreak. The WHO publishes current outbreak alerts, and the UKHSA Travel Health Pro resource provides destination-specific advice.
- Your itinerary takes you into rural or remote areas where access to clean water and sanitation is limited.
- You are working or volunteering in a humanitarian setting, refugee camp or healthcare facility in an affected region.
- You are visiting family in a high-risk area and will be staying in local accommodation, eating local food and drinking local water.
- You have a health condition that increases your risk from severe gastrointestinal illness.
Dukoral also provides partial protection against traveller’s diarrhoea caused by ETEC, one of the most common causes of illness in travellers to tropical regions. For travellers concerned about this, the vaccine offers a secondary benefit alongside its core protection against cholera.

What Is Cholera and WHY DOES VACCINATION MATTER?
What Is Cholera and WHY DOES VACCINATION MATTER?
Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It spreads through contaminated water and food, and is most prevalent in regions where access to clean water and sanitation is limited. Active cholera is present across parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Haiti and parts of Latin America.
The illness causes profuse watery diarrhoea, vomiting and rapid fluid loss. Severe cases can lead to profound dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, kidney failure and death, sometimes within hours of symptom onset. Oral rehydration therapy is the primary treatment, but access to medical care is frequently limited in the regions where cholera is most common.
Globally, the WHO estimates between 1.3 and 4 million cholera cases occur each year, causing between 21,000 and 143,000 deaths. Outbreaks tend to follow humanitarian crises, flooding and conflict. Recent years have seen large outbreaks in Yemen, Haiti, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and parts of South and Southeast Asia.
For travellers to high-risk regions, vaccination reduces the risk of infection and provides a layer of protection that food and water precautions alone cannot guarantee.

How the Cholera Vaccine Works: DUKORAI EXPLAINED

How the Cholera Vaccine Works: DUKORAI EXPLAINED
We administer Dukoral, the oral cholera vaccine licensed in the UK. Unlike most travel vaccines, Dukoral is not an injection. It is taken as a drink: an oral suspension mixed with a buffer solution and consumed at the clinic. No needles are involved.
For adults and children aged six and over, two doses are required, taken one to six weeks apart. The course should be completed at least one week before potential exposure, and ideally at least two weeks before travel. For children aged two to five, three doses are needed, taken one to six weeks apart.
Dukoral stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against the cholera toxin and against Vibrio cholerae. It provides approximately 85 per cent protection against cholera caused by the El Tor biotype, which accounts for most current cases worldwide.
A useful secondary benefit is Dukoral’s cross-protection against enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), a bacterium responsible for a significant proportion of traveller’s diarrhoea. This cross-protection lasts approximately three months in adults.
Boosters are needed within two years for adults and children aged six and over if risk continues. Children aged two to five require a booster within six months.
Cholera Vaccine FAQs
Dukoral is the oral cholera vaccine licensed in the UK. It is taken as a drink, not as an injection. The suspension is mixed with a buffer solution at the clinic and consumed. You should avoid food and drink, including chewing gum, for one hour before and one hour after taking each dose. The vaccine should be consumed within two hours of preparation.
Not necessarily. The cholera vaccine is not recommended as routine for all travellers to endemic regions. It is recommended for those at higher risk: aid workers, healthcare workers, backpackers in areas with limited sanitation, VFR travellers staying in local accommodation, and those travelling during an active outbreak. Your clinician will advise based on your specific itinerary and risk profile.
The full two-dose course should be completed at least one week before travel to an at-risk region. Two weeks or more is preferable where your schedule allows it. If you are travelling at short notice, come in as soon as possible and your clinician will advise on what is achievable in your timeframe.
Yes. Dukoral is licensed for children from age two. Children aged two to five need three doses taken one to six weeks apart; children aged six and over need two doses, the same as adults. Let us know when booking if you are bringing a child so we can allow appropriate time and prepare the correct dose volume.
In adults and children aged six and over, protection from a full two-dose course lasts up to two years. In children aged two to five, protection lasts up to six months. If you remain at risk beyond these periods, a booster dose is recommended.
Yes. Dukoral can be taken at the same time as other travel vaccinations. The oral vaccine does not interfere with injectable vaccines administered at the same visit. Your clinician will confirm timing at your pre-vaccination consultation.
Adults and children aged six and over need two doses, taken one to six weeks apart. Children aged two to five need three doses, taken one to six weeks apart. The full course should be completed at least one week before potential exposure to cholera.
Not routinely. The cholera vaccine is not funded by the NHS for most travellers and must be accessed privately. Your GP may be able to advise on eligibility in specific circumstances, but for the majority of travellers, private vaccination is the practical route.
Partially. Dukoral provides cross-protection against enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), one of the most common causes of traveller’s diarrhoea. This protection is estimated at around 25 to 50 per cent and lasts approximately three months in adults. While it is not a substitute for food and water precautions, it does offer a meaningful secondary benefit for travellers to high-risk regions.
Dukoral is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported side effects are mild gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhoea, and occasionally headache. These are usually brief and resolve without treatment. Serious reactions are rare.
Yes, if you remain at risk. Adults and children aged six and over who need ongoing protection require a booster within two years of the initial course. Children aged two to five need a booster within six months. If you have previously had Dukoral and need a single booster dose, your clinician will confirm whether the interval since your last dose allows a single top-up rather than a full repeat course.
The available data on Dukoral in pregnancy is limited, and it is not routinely recommended unless the risk of cholera is considered high. Your clinician will discuss your individual circumstances and advise on the most appropriate course of action.
