When Should You Book Your TRAVEL VACCINATIONS?

When Should You Book Your TRAVEL VACCINATIONS?
The earlier you book, the more options you have. Some vaccines require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and cannot be compressed into a single visit without an accelerated schedule. Rabies takes three doses over three to four weeks. Japanese encephalitis requires two doses at least a week apart.
As a general guide:
- Book eight to twelve weeks before departure if you are travelling to high-risk regions in sub-Saharan Africa, South or South-East Asia, or South America. This allows time for full multi-dose courses.
- Book four to six weeks before departure for most standard travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and meningitis ACWY.
- Booked late? Come in as soon as you can. Many individual vaccines can be given in a single visit, and we offer accelerated hepatitis B schedules for those with less preparation time.
Yellow fever requires a certificate from a registered centre, and protection takes ten days to develop. If your destination requires a yellow fever certificate for entry, this is the most time-sensitive vaccine to book.

What to Expect at Your TRAVEL HEALTH CONSULATION
What to Expect at Your TRAVEL HEALTH CONSULATION
A travel health consultation at our clinics covers more than a list of recommended vaccines. Your clinician will build a full picture of where you are going, for how long, and what you plan to do, alongside your existing vaccination history, current medications and any relevant health conditions.
From that, they will recommend vaccines specific to your itinerary, advise on malaria risk and suitable prophylaxis, and cover practical guidance on food and water safety, insect bite prevention and what to do if you become unwell abroad.
Questions your clinician will typically cover:
- Your destination or destinations, including transit stops.
- Planned activities: rural travel, trekking, water activities, or time in healthcare settings.
- Accommodation type and remoteness.
- Duration and whether this is a one-off trip or regular travel to the region.
- Any underlying health conditions or medications that may affect which vaccines are suitable.
Most vaccines can be given at the same appointment. Where a staged course is needed, we schedule the additional doses and remind you when they are due.

Which Vaccines Do You Need FOR YOUR DESTINATION?

Which Vaccines Do You Need FOR YOUR DESTINATION?
Requirements vary by destination, itinerary and individual health. The following gives a general guide; your clinician will confirm what applies to your specific trip.
Africa: Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever (required for entry to many countries), meningitis ACWY, rabies for rural or long-stay travel, and malaria prophylaxis for most of the continent.
South and South-East Asia: Hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies, Japanese encephalitis for rural areas, hepatitis B. Malaria prophylaxis for many destinations in the region.
South America: Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever (required or strongly recommended for several countries), rabies for rural travel.
Middle East: Meningitis ACWY is a visa requirement for Hajj and Umrah. Hepatitis A for most destinations in the region.
All destinations: Check that your routine vaccinations are up to date before you travel. Tetanus, diphtheria, polio and hepatitis B boosters are often overdue and form the baseline of any travel health plan, regardless of where you are going.
Travel Vaccination FAQs
As early as possible, and ideally eight to twelve weeks before departure if you are travelling to high-risk regions. Some vaccines require two or three doses spread over several weeks. If you are travelling sooner, book as soon as you can; many single-dose vaccines can be given immediately, and we offer accelerated schedules for some courses.
Some travel vaccines are available on the NHS at no cost, including hepatitis A in certain circumstances, typhoid, cholera and polio boosters. However, the majority of travel vaccines, including yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis B and tick-borne encephalitis, are not routinely provided on the NHS and must be accessed privately. Your NHS GP may also have a long wait for travel appointments during peak summer months.
In most cases, yes. Multiple vaccines can be administered at a single visit. Where a course requires more than one dose, we will schedule the remaining doses and remind you when they are due.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is a standardised International Certificate of Vaccination (ICV), issued on official yellow card documentation. It is required at border control in countries that mandate yellow fever vaccination for entry. Other vaccines are recorded on a standard vaccination record or travel health letter, which is accepted by employers, airlines and health authorities.
Yes. We vaccinate children at all our clinics. Vaccine recommendations for children differ in some cases from adults, for example on age thresholds and dosing, and your clinician will adjust recommendations accordingly. Let us know when booking that you are bringing a child so we can allow the right amount of time.
You will receive a written travel health record confirming the vaccines administered, dates, and batch numbers. If you require a yellow fever certificate, this will be issued as an International Certificate of Vaccination. These documents are accepted by airlines, border authorities, employers and occupational health services.
Your clinician will review your full itinerary, including transit stops, and tailor vaccine recommendations to cover all destinations. In some cases, an unusual itinerary or high-risk combination of countries may call for vaccines not routinely required for a single destination. Bringing your full travel itinerary to the appointment helps us give you the most accurate advice.
Yes, in many cases. Several travel vaccines are single-dose and can be given at your first appointment, including hepatitis A, typhoid and meningitis ACWY. An accelerated hepatitis B course can also be completed over three weeks. Yellow fever is the exception: the certificate takes ten days to become valid, so this needs to be arranged at least ten days before entry into a country that requires it.
Prices vary by vaccine. A travel health consultation will establish which vaccines you need, and we will confirm pricing before going ahead. Full pricing is available on our booking page, and you can call us for a quote specific to your destination.
Several countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South America require proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry, including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Brazil and Ecuador, among others. Requirements can also apply if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is present. Your clinician will confirm whether a certificate is needed for your specific itinerary. We can issue yellow fever vaccination certificates at our designated centres on the day of vaccination, though ten days must pass before the certificate becomes valid.
Most are given as a small injection in the upper arm and cause only brief discomfort at the site. Side effects are typically mild: soreness or redness at the injection site, and occasionally fatigue or a low-grade fever for a day or two. Your clinician will go through the expected side effects for each vaccine before administering it.
Malaria prophylaxis varies by destination and resistance patterns. Your clinician will recommend appropriate antimalarial medication based on where you are travelling, the duration of your stay and your medical history. Common options include Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil), doxycycline and, less frequently, mefloquine. We can supply a private prescription at the same appointment.
No. No GP referral is needed. You can book directly online or by calling us, and your travel health consultation at the clinic covers everything a GP would assess before recommending vaccines.
