When Should Bournemouth Travellers BOOK THEIR JABS?

Timing depends on where you are going and which vaccines you need. Some require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and cannot be completed in a single visit without an accelerated schedule.

As a practical guide for Bournemouth and Dorset patients:

  • Eight to twelve weeks before departure: allow this much lead time if you are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa, South or South-East Asia, or South America. Rabies takes three doses over three to four weeks; Japanese encephalitis requires two doses at least one week apart.
  • Four to six weeks before departure: sufficient for most standard travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and meningitis ACWY.
  • Less than four weeks: come in as soon as you can: Many travel vaccines are single-dose and can be given immediately.

For cruise travellers, the yellow fever certificate is particularly relevant if your ship calls at countries where proof of vaccination is required for boarding or disembarkation. The certificate does not become valid until ten days after vaccination, so plan accordingly.

What Your Bournemouth TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES

What Your Bournemouth TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES

Your travel health consultation at our Bournemouth clinic covers more than a standard vaccine checklist. Your clinician will take a full account of your destination, itinerary, travel dates, planned activities, accommodation type and existing vaccination history, alongside any current medications or health conditions that may affect vaccine choice.

From there, they will confirm which vaccines are recommended or required, advise on malaria risk and suitable prophylaxis, and cover practical guidance on food and water safety, insect bite prevention, altitude sickness where relevant, and what to do if you fall ill abroad.

For cruise travellers, the consultation includes specific advice on vaccination requirements at each port of call, hygiene considerations on board and access to healthcare at sea. Older travellers or those with existing health conditions may also wish to discuss which vaccines are most appropriate given their circumstances.

Where multiple vaccines are needed, most can be given at the same appointment. A written travel health record is issued before you leave.

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED

Requirements vary by destination, itinerary and individual health. The following is a general guide; your Bournemouth clinician will confirm what applies to your specific trip.

A significant number of Bournemouth patients travel by cruise, departing from Southampton on Mediterranean, Caribbean, West African and Far East itineraries. Cruise travellers face specific vaccination considerations: yellow fever certificates may be required if the ship calls at countries with entry requirements, and hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended for port destinations across Africa and Southeast Asia.

Africa (Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania): Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, meningitis ACWY. Malaria prophylaxis for all three countries.

Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Bali): Hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies, Japanese encephalitis for rural areas. Malaria prophylaxis for some regions.

Caribbean: Hepatitis A, typhoid. Yellow fever required for some destinations. Malaria risk low in most tourist areas.

South America: Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies for remote travel.

Middle East: Meningitis ACWY for Hajj and Umrah; hepatitis A for most destinations.
