Yellow Fever Vaccine for Gap Year AND STUDENT TRAVEL

Yellow Fever Vaccine for Gap Year AND STUDENT TRAVEL
Bournemouth and the surrounding area send many gap year travellers and students to Africa and South America each year. Whether you are heading to volunteer in East Africa, travel the Amazon basin, or backpack through multiple countries, yellow fever vaccination may be required, recommended, or both.
For many popular gap year destinations, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana and Brazil, the vaccine is either required for entry or strongly recommended for personal protection. Yellow fever has no specific treatment and a high case fatality rate in severe cases. Vaccination provides around 99 per cent protection after a single dose.
Only designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres can administer the vaccine and issue the ICVP. Our Bournemouth clinic holds this designation from NaTHNaC.
Book as early as possible before your departure. The ICVP becomes valid ten days after vaccination. Same-day appointments are available; you do not need a GP referral.
Yellow Fever Vaccine for Older Travellers: WHAT TO KNOW
Yellow Fever Vaccine for Older Travellers: WHAT TO KNOW
The yellow fever vaccine is safe and effective for most healthy adults of any age. However, travellers over 60 who have never been vaccinated require an individual clinical assessment before receiving the vaccine.
This is because the two rare but serious adverse events associated with yellow fever vaccination, YEL-AVD and YEL-AND, occur at a slightly higher rate in older first-time recipients than in younger adults. The absolute risk remains very low, estimated at around one in 250,000 to one in 400,000 doses overall. Your clinician will assess the balance between this risk and the genuine risk of yellow fever in the specific region you are visiting.
For most older travellers to endemic countries in Africa or South America, the risk of the disease substantially outweighs the risk of the vaccine. The decision is made on an individual basis.
Those over 60 who were previously vaccinated do not carry the same elevated risk and do not routinely require reassessment before re-travel.

Who Should Not Have THE YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?

Who Should Not Have THE YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?
Stamaril is a live attenuated vaccine and is not appropriate for all travellers. Your clinician at our Bournemouth clinic will assess suitability at your pre-vaccination consultation.
The vaccine is contraindicated in:
- Infants under nine months of age. Under six months is an absolute contraindication; those aged six to eight months may be vaccinated only in exceptional circumstances when travel risk is very high.
- Immunocompromised individuals: those on immunosuppressive therapy, people with HIV with significantly reduced CD4 counts, and those with primary immunodeficiency conditions.
- Those with a severe egg allergy or a confirmed allergy to any vaccine component, as Stamaril is produced in eggs.
- Individuals with a thymus disorder, including thymoma, thymectomy, myasthenia gravis or DiGeorge syndrome.
- Pregnant women (vaccination is generally avoided; may be considered when travel to an endemic country is unavoidable and the risk of yellow fever is high).
Travellers over 60 who have never been vaccinated face a slightly elevated risk of rare but serious adverse events and require individual clinical assessment before vaccination.
If vaccination is contraindicated, we can issue a medical exemption letter at our Bournemouth clinic. Not all borders accept it.

Under WHO guidance updated in 2016, a single dose provides lifelong protection for most healthy adults. The ICVP is valid for life. Some borders may still query certificates issued before 2016; re-vaccination is an option.
Our Bournemouth clinic can issue a medical exemption letter. This is not accepted at all borders; your clinician will advise on which destinations are likely to accept it.
Mild reactions are common: soreness at the injection site, mild headache, low-grade fever and muscle aches for a few days. Two rare but serious adverse events exist: YEL-AVD and YEL-AND. Both are extremely rare, estimated at about 1 in 250,000 to 1 in 400,000 doses. Risk is slightly higher in those over 60. Your clinician will discuss this before vaccination.
For most healthy adults, yes. However, those over 60 who have never been vaccinated require an individual clinical assessment before the vaccine is given, as the rare serious adverse events associated with yellow fever vaccination occur at a slightly higher rate in older first-time recipients. Your clinician will assess whether vaccination is appropriate given your destination and health. For most older travellers to endemic regions, the risk of yellow fever substantially outweighs the vaccine risk.
A YFVC is a clinic designated by NaTHNaC to administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the ICVP. Only registered YFVCs can legally issue the certificate. Our Bournemouth clinic holds this designation. A GP practice, pharmacy or unregistered clinic cannot provide a valid ICVP.
Same-day appointments are often available. The ICVP becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, so you must be vaccinated at least 10 days before you enter a country that requires it.
Yes. For healthy young adults travelling to endemic regions in Africa or South America, the vaccine is recommended and well tolerated. The ICVP will be required for entry to many of the most common gap year destinations.
Yes. We offer typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningitis ACWY, rabies and other travel vaccines at our Bournemouth clinic. Most can be given at the same appointment.
