Who Needs the DIPHTHERIA, TETANUS AND POLIO BOOSTER?

A DTP booster may be needed before travel, after a wound, if your vaccination history is incomplete, or if it has been more than ten years since your last dose.

Book DTP Vaccine
  • Travellers to polio-affected countries, including Pakistan and Afghanistan, where polio remains in circulation.
  • Adults who have not had a tetanus or diphtheria booster in ten years or more.
  • Those who are unsure of their vaccination history and want to confirm their immunity status.
  • Adults who never completed the full primary DTP course in childhood.
  • Travellers to regions where diphtheria remains a risk, including parts of South Asia, Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Anyone who has sustained a wound, cut or burn and is unsure whether their tetanus protection is current.
  • Healthcare workers and those with occupational exposure to tetanus risk.
  • Those who need a vaccination certificate confirming DTP status for travel, a visa or an occupational health requirement.

Do You Need a Private DTP BOOSTER VACCINATION?

The NHS provides DTP vaccination in childhood as part of the routine immunisation schedule, with the final teenage booster typically given at age thirteen to fifteen. After that, NHS DTP boosters for adults are available in specific circumstances: following a wound that poses a tetanus risk, or for those who have not completed their primary course.

For many adults, access to a DTP booster through the NHS is limited, particularly for travel purposes. GP practices do not routinely offer DTP boosters to healthy adults checking their status before an overseas trip.

Private DTP vaccination at our clinics is available to any adult, without a referral, at a time that suits you.

You may need a private DTP booster if:

  • Your last booster was more than ten years ago and you are travelling to a destination where these diseases are present.
  • You are travelling to Pakistan or Afghanistan, where polio remains endemic, and want to confirm your polio immunity is current.
  • You are travelling to parts of Asia, Eastern Europe or Africa where diphtheria is not fully controlled.
  • You need a vaccination record or certificate confirming DTP status for a visa, employer or occupational health service.
  • You are unsure of your vaccination history and want a clinician to review it and advise.

Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio: UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS

Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio: UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS

Diphtheria, tetanus and polio are three serious diseases that were widespread in the UK before vaccination was introduced. High coverage has controlled all three domestically, but they continue to circulate in other parts of the world, and unvaccinated or under-vaccinated adults travelling to at-risk regions remain vulnerable.

Diphtheria is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, spread through respiratory droplets. It produces a thick membrane at the back of the throat that can block the airway, and releases toxins that damage the heart and nerves. Case fatality rates without treatment remain high. Diphtheria continues to circulate in parts of South Asia, Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and Eastern Europe, where vaccine coverage is inconsistent.

Tetanus enters the body through breaks in the skin, from cuts, wounds, burns or abrasions contaminated with Clostridium tetani spores, which are present in soil, dust and animal waste worldwide. The toxin causes progressive muscle spasms, including the jaw spasms that give the disease its common name. Even with intensive care, the fatality rate remains around 10 to 20 per cent.

Polio is a viral infection spread through contaminated water or food. Around one in 200 cases results in irreversible paralysis. Polio remains endemic in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

How the DTP Booster Works: REVAXIS EXPLAINED

We administer Revaxis, the combined diphtheria, tetanus and polio booster licensed for adults and children aged six and over. Revaxis is given as a single intramuscular injection, usually into the upper arm.

The vaccine contains low-dose diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, and inactivated poliovirus types 1, 2 and 3. It is formulated specifically as a booster for those who have already completed a primary DTP course. It contains no live viruses or bacteria and cannot cause the diseases it protects against.

For most adults who completed the full childhood immunisation schedule in the UK, a single Revaxis injection provides a sufficient top-up. Adults who have never received the full primary course may need a series of three doses, and your clinician will advise on the appropriate schedule after reviewing your vaccination history.

Immunity develops within days. Side effects are usually mild: soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site, and occasionally a low-grade fever or fatigue for a day or two.

A vaccination record confirming the vaccine name, date and batch number is issued at the appointment, and is accepted by travel authorities, embassies, employers and occupational health services.

Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio Vaccine FAQs

  • The DTP booster is a single injection that provides protection against three diseases: diphtheria, tetanus and polio. We administer Revaxis, the combined adult booster formulation. A single dose tops up protection in adults who have already completed the full childhood course.
