When Should Oxford Travellers BOOK THEIR TRAVEL JABS?

When Should Oxford Travellers BOOK THEIR TRAVEL JABS?
Timing depends on where you are going and which vaccines you need. Some require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and cannot be completed in a single visit without an accelerated schedule.
As a practical guide for Oxford patients:
- Eight to twelve weeks before departure: allow this much lead time if you are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa, South or South-East Asia, or South America. Rabies takes three doses over three to four weeks; Japanese encephalitis requires two doses at least one week apart.
- Four to six weeks before departure: sufficient for most standard travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and meningitis ACWY.
- Less than four weeks: come in as soon as you can: Many travel vaccines are single-dose and can be given immediately.
Researchers and fieldworkers travelling at short notice should call us as soon as their departure is confirmed. We will advise on what is achievable in the available time and what additional precautions to take.
What Your Oxford TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES
What Your Oxford TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES
Your travel health consultation at our Oxford clinic covers more than a standard vaccine checklist. Your clinician will take a full account of your destination, itinerary, travel dates, planned activities, accommodation type and existing vaccination history, alongside any current medications or health conditions that may affect vaccine choice.
From there, they will confirm which vaccines are recommended or required, advise on malaria risk and suitable prophylaxis, and cover practical guidance on food and water safety, insect bite prevention, altitude sickness where relevant, and what to do if you fall ill abroad.
Researchers and fieldworkers often operate in settings where standard tourist health advice is insufficient: longer stays in remote areas, limited healthcare access, and higher vector and food-borne disease exposure all require a more detailed assessment. Your clinician will tailor the consultation to your specific fieldwork context.
Where multiple vaccines are needed, most can be given at the same appointment. A written travel health record is issued before you leave.

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED
Requirements vary by destination, itinerary and individual health. The following is a general guide; your Oxford clinician will confirm what applies to your specific trip.
Oxford’s patient profile includes a high proportion of University of Oxford academics, MRC researchers, NHS clinicians and international students. Many travel to sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and South America for fieldwork, clinical research and academic collaboration, and their vaccination needs are often more detailed than those of a standard tourist.
Sub-Saharan Africa (research and fieldwork): Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever (required for many countries), meningitis ACWY, rabies (particularly for longer field stays), hepatitis B. Malaria prophylaxis essential.
South and South-East Asia (fieldwork and academic travel): Hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies, Japanese encephalitis for rural areas. Malaria prophylaxis for many destinations.
South America (field research): Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies for remote or jungle settings.
Academic conference travel (Asia, Americas, Middle East): Confirm routine vaccinations are up to date; yellow fever and hepatitis A where relevant.
