Yellow Fever Vaccination for Research and FIELDWORK TRAVEL

Yellow Fever Vaccination for Research and FIELDWORK TRAVEL
Oxford’s research community sends many scientists, doctors, conservationists, and social researchers to yellow fever endemic regions each year. Fieldwork in sub-Saharan Africa, ecological surveys in the Amazon basin, clinical trials in West Africa, and conservation projects in East African national parks all carry a real risk of yellow fever exposure.
Infected mosquitoes transmit yellow fever in jungle and savanna environments. Sylvatic transmission from primates and canopy mosquitoes is active in forest and woodland zones, where much field research takes place. Vaccination provides around 99 per cent protection after a single dose.
Many institutional travel health policies and funder requirements specify yellow fever vaccination for travel to endemic regions, in addition to the destination country's entry requirements.
Our Oxford clinic is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We issue the ICVP on the day of vaccination. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed; the certificate is valid from ten days after the injection.
Is Yellow Fever Vaccine Available on the NHS IN OXFORD?
Is Yellow Fever Vaccine Available on the NHS IN OXFORD?
No. The NHS does not provide the yellow fever vaccine, and you cannot get it from a GP practice. Only registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres can administer and certify it, and all YFVCs operate privately. Our Oxford clinic holds this designation from NaTHNaC.
For Oxford travellers, including students, academic staff and researchers, a private YFVC appointment is the only route to both the vaccine and a valid ICVP. Same-day appointments are available with no referral required.
The ICVP becomes valid ten days after vaccination and is now issued as a lifetime document under WHO guidance updated in 2016. If your departure is within the next fortnight, let us know when booking and we will confirm whether your certificate will be valid in time.
You can receive yellow fever alongside other travel vaccines at the same appointment. If you plan multiple trips to endemic regions, we can advise on an appropriate long-term vaccination schedule.

Who Cannot Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?

Who Cannot Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?
Stamaril is a live attenuated vaccine. It stimulates immunity by introducing a weakened form of the yellow fever virus and is therefore not appropriate for travellers with conditions that impair the immune system’s ability to handle a live vaccine. Your clinician at our Oxford clinic will assess suitability before administering any vaccine.
The vaccine is contraindicated in:
- Infants under nine months of age. Under six months is an absolute contraindication; those aged six to eight months may be vaccinated only in exceptional circumstances.
- Immunocompromised individuals: those on immunosuppressive medication, people with HIV with significantly reduced CD4 counts, and those with primary immunodeficiency.
- Anyone with a severe egg allergy or confirmed allergy to any vaccine component, as Stamaril is produced in eggs.
- Those with a thymus disorder, including thymoma, thymectomy, myasthenia gravis or DiGeorge syndrome.
- Pregnant women (generally avoided; individual assessment required when travel to an endemic country is unavoidable).
Travellers over 60 who have not previously been vaccinated require careful individual assessment due to a slightly elevated risk of rare adverse events.
Where vaccination is not possible, a medical exemption letter can be issued. Not all borders accept it.

Yellow Fever Vaccine Oxford: FAQs
At our designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre in Oxford city centre. We administer Stamaril and issue the official ICVP at the same appointment, with same-day availability and no GP referral required.
Many sub-Saharan African countries require the ICVP for all arriving travellers, including Ghana, Angola, DRC, Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone. Others require it from travellers arriving from or transiting through endemic countries. Some South American countries apply requirements to specific regions. Your clinician will confirm current requirements for your destination.
Current pricing is on our booking page. The ICVP is included in the appointment fee. Call us for a quote before booking.
Under WHO guidance updated in 2016, a single dose provides lifelong protection for most healthy adults. The ICVP is valid for life. Some borders may still query older certificates; re-vaccination is an option for a clean document.
Our Oxford clinic can issue a medical exemption letter. This is not universally accepted at borders; your clinician will advise on which destinations are likely to accept it.
Mild reactions are common: soreness at the injection site, mild headache, low-grade fever and muscle aches for a few days. Two rare but serious adverse events exist: YEL-AVD and YEL-AND. Both are extremely rare, estimated at about 1 in 250,000 to 1 in 400,000 doses. Risk is slightly higher in those over 60. Your clinician will discuss this before vaccination.
If your fieldwork is in a yellow fever endemic country, vaccination is recommended for personal protection and may also be required for entry. Many universities and research funders specify yellow fever vaccination in their occupational health and travel safety policies. Your clinician will advise on entry requirements for your specific destination and can provide documentation for institutional health records.
A YFVC is a clinic designated by NaTHNaC to administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the ICVP. Only registered YFVCs can legally issue the certificate. Our Oxford clinic holds this designation. A GP surgery, pharmacy or unregistered clinic cannot provide a valid ICVP.
Same-day appointments are often available. The ICVP becomes valid ten days after vaccination, so you must receive the vaccine at least ten days before entering a country that requires it.
A single dose of Stamaril provides lifelong protection for most healthy adults. If you travel regularly to endemic countries, current guidelines require no repeat doses. Your clinician can advise on any exceptions that apply to your specific health history.
Yes. We offer typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningitis ACWY, rabies and other travel vaccines at our Oxford clinic. Most can be given at the same appointment.
