When Should Derby Travellers BOOK THEIR TRAVEL JABS?

When Should Derby Travellers BOOK THEIR TRAVEL JABS?

Timing depends on where you are going and which vaccines you need. Some require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and cannot be completed in a single visit without an accelerated schedule.

As a practical guide for Derby and Derbyshire patients:

  • Eight to twelve weeks before departure: allow this much lead time if you are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa, South or South-East Asia, or South America. Rabies takes three doses over three to four weeks; Japanese encephalitis requires two doses at least one week apart.
  • Four to six weeks before departure: sufficient for most standard travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and meningitis ACWY.
  • Less than four weeks: come in as soon as you can. Many travel vaccines are single-dose and can be given immediately. Accelerated hepatitis B schedules are available for travellers with less preparation time.

For yellow fever, the certificate does not become valid until ten days after vaccination. Patients travelling from East Midlands Airport should factor this into their pre-departure timeline.

What Your Derby TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES

What Your Derby TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES

Your travel health consultation at our Derby clinic covers more than a standard vaccine checklist. Your clinician will take a full account of your destination, itinerary, travel dates, planned activities, accommodation type and existing vaccination history, alongside any current medications or health conditions that may affect vaccine choice.

From there, they will confirm which vaccines are recommended or required, advise on malaria risk and suitable prophylaxis, and cover practical guidance on food and water safety, insect bite prevention, altitude sickness where relevant, and what to do if you fall ill abroad.

Where multiple vaccines are needed, most can be given at the same appointment. Where a staged course is required, follow-up doses are scheduled on the day and we contact you when they are due. A written travel health record is issued before you leave.

Business travellers visiting manufacturing or engineering sites across Southeast Asia and India benefit particularly from a structured pre-travel health assessment, as trips are often planned at short notice.

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED

Requirements vary by destination, itinerary and individual health. The following is a general guide; your Derby clinician will confirm what applies to your specific trip.

East Midlands Airport, a short distance from Derby, flies directly to Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Egypt, Florida and several other popular leisure destinations. For most short European and Mediterranean holidays, routine vaccination checks are sufficient; for Egypt, hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended.

Derby also has a significant engineering and manufacturing sector, with companies including Rolls-Royce sending staff to Southeast Asia, India and China on a regular basis.

South and South-East Asia (business and family travel): Hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies, Japanese encephalitis for rural areas. Malaria prophylaxis for many destinations.

Africa: Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever (required for many countries), meningitis ACWY, rabies. Malaria prophylaxis for most of the continent.

Caribbean and Far East (leisure): Hepatitis A, typhoid. Yellow fever for certain destinations. Malaria prophylaxis where applicable.

Middle East: Meningitis ACWY for Hajj and Umrah; hepatitis A for most destinations.
