When Should Cambridge Travellers BOOK THEIR TRAVEL JABS?

When Should Cambridge Travellers BOOK THEIR TRAVEL JABS?
Timing depends on where you are going and which vaccines you need. Some require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and cannot be completed in a single visit without an accelerated schedule.
As a practical guide for Cambridge patients:
- Eight to twelve weeks before departure: allow this much lead time if you are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa, South or South-East Asia, or South America. Rabies takes three doses over three to four weeks; Japanese encephalitis requires two doses at least one week apart.
- Four to six weeks before departure: sufficient for most standard travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and meningitis ACWY.
- Less than four weeks: come in as soon as you can: Many travel vaccines are single-dose and can be given immediately.
Researchers and fieldworkers whose travel dates are confirmed at short notice should call us immediately. We will advise on what is achievable and ensure the most critical vaccines are prioritised within your available time.
What Your Cambridge TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES
What Your Cambridge TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES
Your travel health consultation at our Cambridge clinic covers more than a standard vaccine checklist. Your clinician will take a full account of your destination, itinerary, travel dates, planned activities, accommodation type and existing vaccination history, alongside any current medications or health conditions that may affect vaccine choice.
From there, they will confirm which vaccines are recommended or required, advise on malaria risk and suitable prophylaxis, and cover practical guidance on food and water safety, insect bite prevention, altitude sickness where relevant, and what to do if you fall ill abroad.
For Cambridge researchers and fieldworkers, the consultation goes further: remote settings, limited healthcare access, long stays in rural or peri-urban areas, and specific occupational exposures all require a more detailed assessment than a standard tourist trip. Your clinician is experienced with this type of travel.
Where multiple vaccines are needed, most can be given at the same appointment. A written travel health record is issued before you leave.

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED
Requirements vary by destination, itinerary and individual health. The following is a general guide; your Cambridge clinician will confirm what applies to your specific trip.
Cambridge’s patient base includes a high proportion of University of Cambridge and MRC researchers, clinical scientists, Cambridge Biomedical Campus staff and technology sector employees from across the Silicon Fen cluster. Many travel to sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and South America for fieldwork, clinical trials, academic conferences and business.
Sub-Saharan Africa (fieldwork and research): Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever (required for many countries), meningitis ACWY, rabies for remote or long-stay travel, hepatitis B. Malaria prophylaxis essential.
South and South-East Asia (research and business): Hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies, Japanese encephalitis for rural areas. Malaria prophylaxis for many destinations.
South America (field research): Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies for jungle or remote travel.
India (research collaborations and business): Hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies. Malaria prophylaxis for many regions.
Routine vaccinations should be confirmed up to date before any international departure.

Yes. We regularly see University of Cambridge, MRC and Cambridge Biomedical Campus researchers preparing for fieldwork in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and South America. Fieldwork travel typically requires a more detailed consultation than a tourist trip: longer stays, remote settings, limited local healthcare and greater disease exposure all need to be factored in. Bring your full itinerary and details of your accommodation and activities to your appointment.
Yes. Our Cambridge clinic is a designated yellow fever vaccination centre. The certificate does not become valid until ten days after vaccination, so factor this into your pre-departure planning.
