- Travellers whose previous certificate predates 11 July 2016 and who need a new lifelong ICVP before departure.
Yellow Fever Vaccination for Medical and SCIENTIFIC FIELDWORK

Yellow Fever Vaccination for Medical and SCIENTIFIC FIELDWORK
Cambridge’s research community is one of the most internationally active in the UK. Clinical researchers, tropical disease specialists, conservation biologists, anthropologists and biomedical scientists regularly travel to yellow fever endemic regions in sub-Saharan Africa and South America as part of their work.
For many field settings, including rainforest zones, rural health facilities in West Africa, and wildlife conservation areas in East Africa, the risk of yellow fever exposure from infected mosquitoes is real. Vaccination provides around 99 per cent protection after a single dose of Stamaril and is strongly recommended for all travellers to endemic regions, regardless of whether the destination country formally requires the ICVP.
Several major research funders and institutional travel safety frameworks specify yellow fever vaccination for grant-funded travel to endemic countries.
Our Cambridge clinic is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We issue the ICVP on the day of vaccination. The certificate becomes valid ten days after the injection, so book as soon as your departure is confirmed.
Is Yellow Fever Vaccine Available on the NHS IN CAMBRIDGE?
Is Yellow Fever Vaccine Available on the NHS IN CAMBRIDGE?
No. The NHS does not provide the yellow fever vaccine, and you can't get it from a GP practice. In the UK, only registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres can administer and certify it, and all YFVCs operate privately. Our Cambridge clinic holds this designation from NaTHNaC.
For Cambridge travellers, including university staff, students and researchers, a private YFVC appointment is the only route to both the vaccine and a valid ICVP. Same-day appointments are available with no referral required.
The ICVP is an official WHO document and the only evidence accepted at borders for yellow fever entry requirements. Arriving without it at a country that requires it can result in refusal of entry.
The certificate becomes valid ten days after vaccination and is now valid for life. If you need multiple travel vaccines, you can combine yellow fever with typhoid, hepatitis A, meningitis ACWY, rabies, and others at the same appointment.

Who Should Not Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?

Who Should Not Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?
Stamaril is a live attenuated vaccine. It stimulates immunity using a weakened form of the yellow fever virus and is not appropriate for travellers whose immune system cannot handle a live vaccine safely. Your clinician at our Cambridge clinic will assess suitability before any vaccination is given.
The vaccine is contraindicated in:
- Infants under nine months of age. Under six months is an absolute contraindication; those aged six to eight months may be vaccinated only in exceptional circumstances when travel risk is very high.
- Immunocompromised individuals: those on immunosuppressive medication, people with HIV with significantly reduced CD4 counts, and those with primary immunodeficiency disorders.
- Those with a severe egg allergy or confirmed allergy to any component of the vaccine, as Stamaril is produced in eggs.
- Individuals with a thymus disorder, including thymoma, thymectomy, myasthenia gravis or DiGeorge syndrome.
- Pregnant women (generally avoided; individual assessment required when travel to an endemic region is unavoidable).
Travellers over 60 who have never been vaccinated require individual clinical assessment due to a slightly elevated risk of rare adverse events.
Where vaccination is not possible, a medical exemption letter can be issued. Not all borders accept it.

Yellow Fever Vaccine Cambridge: FAQs
At our designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre in Cambridge city centre. We administer Stamaril and issue the official ICVP at the same appointment, with same-day availability and no GP referral required.
Many sub-Saharan African countries require the ICVP for all arriving travellers. Common research destinations with requirements include Ghana, DRC, Cameroon, Uganda, Angola, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone. Others require the certificate from travellers arriving from or transiting through endemic countries. Requirements can change; your clinician will confirm current rules for your specific itinerary.
Current pricing is on our booking page. The ICVP is included in the appointment fee. Call us for a quote before booking.
Under WHO guidance updated in 2016, a single dose provides lifelong protection for most healthy adults. The ICVP is valid for life. Researchers who travel repeatedly to endemic regions do not need repeat doses under current guidelines.
Our Cambridge clinic can issue a medical exemption letter. This is not universally accepted at borders; your clinician will advise on which destinations are likely to accept it.
Mild reactions are common: soreness at the injection site, mild headache, low-grade fever and muscle aches for a few days. Two rare but serious adverse events exist: YEL-AVD and YEL-AND. Both are extremely rare, estimated at about 1 in 250,000 to 1 in 400,000 doses. Risk is slightly higher in those over 60. Your clinician will discuss this before vaccination.
If your fieldwork is in a yellow fever endemic country, vaccination is recommended for personal protection and may also be required for entry. Many universities, research institutions and funders in Cambridge specify yellow fever vaccination in their occupational health and travel safety policies. Your clinician will advise on what applies to your destination and can provide documentation for institutional health records.
A YFVC is a clinic designated by NaTHNaC to administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the ICVP. Only registered YFVCs can legally issue the certificate. Our Cambridge clinic holds this designation. A GP surgery, pharmacy or unregistered clinic cannot provide a valid ICVP.
Same-day appointments are often available. The ICVP becomes valid ten days after vaccination, so you must receive the vaccine at least ten days before entering a country that requires it. Book as soon as your departure is confirmed.
A single dose of Stamaril provides lifelong protection for most healthy adults. Current WHO guidance recommends no booster. Your clinician can confirm if any exception applies to your specific health history.
Yes. We offer typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningitis ACWY, rabies and other travel vaccines at our Cambridge clinic. Most can be given at the same appointment. Tell us your destination and travel dates when booking.
