When Should Newcastle Travellers BOOK THEIR JABS?

When Should Newcastle Travellers BOOK THEIR JABS?
Timing depends on where you are going and which vaccines you need. Some require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and cannot be completed in a single visit without an accelerated schedule.
As a practical guide for Newcastle patients:
- Eight to twelve weeks before departure: allow this much lead time if you are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa, South or South-East Asia, or South America. Rabies takes three doses over three to four weeks; Japanese encephalitis requires two doses at least one week apart.
- Four to six weeks before departure: sufficient for most standard travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and meningitis ACWY.
- Less than four weeks: come in as soon as you can: Many travel vaccines are single-dose and can be given immediately. Accelerated hepatitis B schedules are available for travellers with less preparation time.
For yellow fever, the certificate does not become valid until ten days after vaccination. If your destination requires proof of vaccination for entry, book this first, well ahead of your Newcastle International Airport departure.
What Your Newcastle TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES
What Your Newcastle TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES
Your travel health consultation at our Newcastle clinic covers more than a standard vaccine checklist. Your clinician will take a full account of your destination, itinerary, travel dates, planned activities, accommodation type and existing vaccination history, alongside any current medications or health conditions that may affect vaccine choice.
From there, they will confirm which vaccines are recommended or required, advise on malaria risk and suitable prophylaxis, and cover practical guidance on food and water safety, insect bite prevention, altitude sickness where relevant, and what to do if you fall ill abroad.
Where multiple vaccines are needed, most can be given at the same appointment. Where a staged course is required, follow-up doses are scheduled on the day and we contact you when they are due. A written travel health record is issued before you leave.
Travellers undertaking gap years, long-haul backpacking trips or volunteering placements abroad often need more detailed advice than a package holiday traveller, and the consultation allows time for that.

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED
Requirements vary by destination, itinerary and individual health. The following is a general guide; your Newcastle clinician will confirm what applies to your specific trip.
Newcastle International Airport flies directly to Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Dubai and several other popular leisure destinations. For most short European and Mediterranean holidays, routine vaccination checks are sufficient. For longer or more ambitious trips, the picture is different.
Newcastle’s growing student population, drawn to Newcastle University and Northumbria University, generates significant demand for gap year and backpacking travel health advice. Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos), South America (Peru, Bolivia, Colombia) and East Africa are among the most common destinations.
- Africa: Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever (required for entry to many countries), meningitis ACWY, rabies. Malaria prophylaxis for most of the continent.
- South and South-East Asia: Hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies, Japanese encephalitis for rural areas. Malaria prophylaxis for many destinations.
- South America: Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies for remote travel.
- Middle East: Meningitis ACWY for Hajj and Umrah; hepatitis A for most destinations.
