- Workers and contractors travelling to West Africa for offshore energy, construction, mining or humanitarian projects, where country requirements mandate the ICVP.

- Travellers whose previous certificate was issued before 11 July 2016 and who want a fresh lifelong document.
Yellow Fever Vaccine for Work and PROJECT TRAVEL

Yellow Fever Vaccine for Work and PROJECT TRAVEL
Newcastle has a significant offshore and international project workforce. Workers travelling to West Africa for oil, gas, engineering, construction or humanitarian roles frequently require yellow fever vaccination as a condition of their contract, their insurer or the destination country’s entry rules.
In sub-Saharan Africa, many of the primary oil and gas producing nations, including Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Angola, require proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry or specify it in occupational health requirements for overseas contractors.
Our Newcastle clinic is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We administer Stamaril and issue the official ICVP at the same appointment. The certificate is valid for life under WHO guidance updated in 2016, from ten days after vaccination.
If you are travelling for work and need to confirm certificate requirements for a specific destination, your clinician will advise at your pre-vaccination consultation. We can also combine yellow fever with other occupationally required travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid and meningitis ACWY.
Is Yellow Fever Vaccine Available on the NHS IN NEWCASTLE?
Is Yellow Fever Vaccine Available on the NHS IN NEWCASTLE?
No. The yellow fever vaccine is not provided by the NHS and cannot be obtained from a GP practice. In the UK, it may only be administered and certificated by clinics registered as designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres. Our Newcastle clinic holds this designation from NaTHNaC.
There is no NHS route to the ICVP. For Newcastle travellers, whether for leisure, work or fieldwork, a private YFVC appointment is the only way to obtain both the vaccine and a valid certificate before travel.
The ICVP becomes valid ten days after vaccination, so the vaccine must be given at least ten days before your departure. If your travel is imminent, let us know when booking and we will confirm whether the certificate will be valid in time for your outbound journey.
Same-day appointments are available at our Newcastle clinic. You do not need a GP referral or a prior consultation to attend.

Who Should Not Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?

Who Should Not Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?
Stamaril is a live attenuated vaccine and is not appropriate for all travellers. Your clinician at our Newcastle clinic will assess suitability at your pre-vaccination consultation.
The vaccine is contraindicated in:
- Infants under nine months. Under six months is an absolute contraindication; those aged six to eight months may be vaccinated only in exceptional circumstances when travel risk is very high.
- Immunocompromised individuals: those on immunosuppressive therapy, people with HIV with significantly reduced CD4 counts, and those with primary immunodeficiency conditions.
- Those with a severe egg allergy or confirmed allergy to any vaccine component, as Stamaril is produced in eggs.
- Individuals with a thymus disorder, including thymoma, thymectomy, myasthenia gravis or DiGeorge syndrome.
- Pregnant women (vaccination is generally avoided; it may be considered when travel to an endemic region is unavoidable and the risk of yellow fever is high).
Those over 60 who have not previously received the vaccine carry a slightly elevated risk of rare but serious adverse events and require individual assessment before vaccination.
If vaccination is contraindicated, a medical exemption letter can be issued at our Newcastle clinic. Not all borders accept it; your clinician will advise on your specific destination.

Mild reactions are common: soreness at the injection site, mild headache, low-grade fever and muscle aches for a few days. Two rare but serious adverse events exist: YEL-AVD (resembles severe yellow fever) and YEL-AND (affects the nervous system). Both are extremely rare, estimated at around one in 250,000 to one in 400,000 doses. Risk is slightly higher in those over 60 and those with thymus conditions. Your clinician will discuss this before vaccination.
If you are travelling to West Africa for offshore, energy, construction or other contract work, the destination country and your employer’s occupational health requirements may both specify yellow fever vaccination. Many countries in sub-Saharan Africa require the ICVP for all arriving travellers. Your clinician will confirm what applies to your specific destination.
