When Should Leicester Travellers BOOK THEIR JABS?

Timing depends on where you are going and which vaccines you need. Some require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and cannot be completed in a single visit without an accelerated schedule.

As a practical guide for Leicester patients:

  • Eight to twelve weeks before departure: allow this much lead time if you are travelling to South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa or South America. Rabies takes three doses over three to four weeks; Japanese encephalitis requires two doses at least one week apart.
  • Four to six weeks before departure: sufficient for most standard travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and meningitis ACWY.
  • Less than four weeks: come in as soon as you can. Many travel vaccines are single-dose and can be given immediately. Accelerated hepatitis B schedules are available for travellers with less preparation time.

For Hajj and Umrah travellers, the meningitis ACWY certificate must be obtained at least ten days before arrival in Saudi Arabia. Book this as early as possible to allow time for the certificate to be issued and accepted.

What Your Leicester TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES

What Your Leicester TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES

Your travel health consultation at our Leicester clinic covers more than a standard vaccine checklist. Your clinician will take a full account of your destination, itinerary, travel dates, planned activities, accommodation type and existing vaccination history, alongside any current medications or health conditions that may affect vaccine choice.

From there, they will confirm which vaccines are recommended or required, advise on malaria risk and suitable prophylaxis, and cover practical guidance on food and water safety, insect bite prevention and what to do if you fall ill abroad.

Where multiple vaccines are needed, most can be given at the same appointment. Where a staged course is required, follow-up doses are scheduled on the day. A written travel health record is issued before you leave.

Patients who travel to visit family in South Asia or East Africa often spend longer in-country, stay in local homes and eat local food, which raises the risk of illness beyond what a standard tourist assessment would identify. Your clinician will factor this in.

Common Destinations and the VACCINES YOU MAY NEED

Requirements vary by destination, itinerary and individual health. The following is a general guide; your Leicester clinician will confirm what applies to your specific trip.

Leicester has one of the highest proportions of South Asian and East African residents of any UK city, and a large number of our Leicester patients travel regularly to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania to visit family. These trips carry a higher risk of travel-related illness than tourist holidays to the same destinations: visits are typically longer, accommodation is with family rather than in hotels, and food and water exposure is higher. VFR (visiting friends and relatives) travellers account for a disproportionate share of travel-related illness in the UK.

South Asia: Hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B, rabies for rural areas. Malaria prophylaxis for many parts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

East Africa: Hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever (required for Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania), meningitis ACWY, rabies. Malaria prophylaxis essential.

Middle East (Hajj and Umrah): Meningitis ACWY is a visa requirement. Hepatitis A recommended. We issue the required certificates on the day.

South-East Asia: Hepatitis A, typhoid, rabies, Japanese encephalitis for rural areas. Malaria prophylaxis for many destinations.
