Who Needs the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE IN LEICESTER?
Yellow fever vaccination is required or recommended for travel to endemic regions in Africa and South America, and for those entering or transiting countries where proof of vaccination is a border condition.

- Travellers to sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, Cameroon, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the ICVP is required or strongly recommended for entry.
- Those visiting South American countries including Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador, particularly in rural or Amazonian regions where yellow fever transmission is active.
- Any traveller whose destination requires the ICVP as a condition of entry, regardless of departure point.
- Those with a connecting flight through a yellow fever endemic country, where the transit route can trigger certificate requirements at the next border.
- Travellers visiting family in endemic regions of Africa or South America and requiring documentary proof of vaccination for entry.
- Those undertaking aid, charity or voluntary work in sub-Saharan Africa or the Amazon basin.
- Travellers who need the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for visa or immigration purposes.
- Anyone whose previous certificate was issued before 11 July 2016 and who wants a new lifelong ICVP.
Which Countries Require the YELLOW FEVER CERTIFICATE?

Which Countries Require the YELLOW FEVER CERTIFICATE?
Entry requirements vary by country and can change. The following groups of countries give a general guide, but your clinician will confirm the current rules for your specific destination at your appointment.
Countries that generally require the ICVP for all arriving travellers include Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, the Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
Countries including Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia require the certificate from travellers arriving from, or transiting through, endemic countries.
In South America, Brazil requires the certificate for entry to certain states. Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru recommend vaccination for travel to endemic areas.
Only a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre may issue the ICVP. Our Leicester clinic holds this designation. A GP surgery, pharmacy or unregistered clinic cannot produce a valid certificate.
Is Yellow Fever Vaccine Available on the NHS IN LEICESTER?
Is Yellow Fever Vaccine Available on the NHS IN LEICESTER?
No. The NHS does not provide the yellow fever vaccine, and you cannot get it from a GP practice. Only registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres can administer and certify it. Our Leicester clinic holds this designation from NaTHNaC. All YFVCs operate privately.
For Leicester travellers, a private YFVC appointment is the only route to both the vaccine and a valid ICVP before travel. There is no NHS alternative.
The ICVP becomes valid ten days after vaccination and is now valid for life. Same-day appointments are available at our Leicester clinic, with no GP referral and no waiting list. If your travel is imminent, let us know when booking so we can confirm the certificate will be valid in time.
If you need multiple travel vaccines, we can combine yellow fever with typhoid, hepatitis A, meningitis ACWY, rabies, and others in the same visit.

Who Should Not Have THE YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?

Who Should Not Have THE YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?
Stamaril is a live attenuated vaccine. It is not appropriate for all travellers, and your clinician at our Leicester clinic will assess suitability before administering the vaccine.
The vaccine is contraindicated in:
- Infants under nine months of age. Under six months is an absolute contraindication; those aged six to eight months may be vaccinated only in exceptional circumstances when travel risk is very high.
- Immunocompromised individuals: those on immunosuppressive therapy, people with HIV with significantly reduced CD4 counts, and those with primary immunodeficiency disorders.
- Anyone with a severe egg allergy or confirmed allergy to any component of the vaccine, as Stamaril is produced in eggs.
- Those with a thymus disorder, including thymoma, thymectomy, myasthenia gravis or DiGeorge syndrome.
- Pregnant women (vaccination is generally avoided; may be considered when travel to an endemic region is unavoidable and risk is high).
Travellers over 60 who have not previously received the vaccine face a slightly elevated risk of rare but serious adverse events and require individual assessment.
Where vaccination is not possible, a medical exemption letter can be issued. This is not accepted at all borders; your clinician will advise.

Yellow Fever Vaccine Leicester: FAQs
At our designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre in Leicester city centre. We administer Stamaril and issue the official ICVP at the same appointment, with same-day availability and no GP referral required.
Many countries in sub-Saharan Africa require the ICVP for all arriving travellers, including Angola, Benin, Cameroon, DRC, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Sierra Leone and Togo. Others, including Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, require it only from travellers arriving from endemic countries. Requirements can change; your clinician will advise at your appointment.
Current pricing is on our booking page. The ICVP is included in the appointment fee. Call us for a quote before booking.
Under WHO guidance updated in 2016, a single dose provides lifelong protection for most healthy adults. The ICVP is valid for life. Some borders may still query older certificates; re-vaccination is an option if you want a clean document.
Yes, from nine months of age. Under six months is an absolute contraindication. Please mention the child’s age when booking.
Yes. We offer typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningitis ACWY, rabies and other vaccines at our Leicester clinic. Most can be given at the same appointment.
If your destination requires the ICVP for entry, yes, regardless of why you are travelling. Many countries in sub-Saharan Africa require proof of yellow fever vaccination from all arriving travellers. Visiting family in an endemic country does not exempt you from entry requirements. Your clinician will confirm what applies to your specific destination.
A YFVC is a clinic designated by NaTHNaC to administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the ICVP. Only registered YFVCs can legally issue the certificate. Our Leicester clinic holds this designation. A GP surgery, pharmacy or unregistered clinic cannot provide a valid ICVP.
Same-day appointments are often available. The ICVP becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, so you must be vaccinated at least 10 days before entering a country that requires it.
Let us know when booking. If the ICVP will not be valid in time, your clinician will advise on your options.
A medical exemption letter can be issued at our Leicester clinic if you have a clinical contraindication. This is not accepted at all borders; your clinician will advise on which destinations are likely to accept it.
Mild reactions are common: soreness at the injection site, mild headache, low-grade fever and muscle aches for a few days. Two rare but serious adverse events exist: YEL-AVD and YEL-AND. Both are extremely rare, estimated at about 1 in 250,000 to 1 in 400,000 doses. Risk is slightly higher in those over 60 and those with thymus conditions. Your clinician will discuss this before vaccination.
