When Should Birmingham TRAVELLERS BOOK THEIR JABS?

When Should Birmingham TRAVELLERS BOOK THEIR JABS?
Timing depends on where you are going and which vaccines you need. Some require a course of two or three doses spread over several weeks, and cannot be completed in a single visit without an accelerated schedule.
As a practical guide for Birmingham patients:
- Eight to twelve weeks before departure: allow this much lead time if you are travelling to sub-Saharan Africa, South or South-East Asia, or South America. Rabies takes three doses over three to four weeks; Japanese encephalitis requires two doses at least one week apart.
- Four to six weeks before departure: sufficient for most standard travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and meningitis ACWY.
- Less than four weeks: come in as soon as you can: Many travel vaccines are single-dose and can be given immediately. Accelerated hepatitis B schedules are available for travellers with less preparation time.
For yellow fever, the certificate does not become valid until ten days after vaccination. If your destination requires proof of vaccination for entry, book this as the first priority.
What Your Birmingham TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES
What Your Birmingham TRAVEL CONSULTATION INCLUDES
Your travel health consultation at our Birmingham clinic covers more than a standard vaccine checklist. Your clinician will take a full account of your destination, itinerary, travel dates, planned activities, accommodation type and existing vaccination history, alongside any current medications or health conditions that may affect which vaccines are most appropriate.
From there, they will confirm which vaccines are recommended or required, advise on malaria risk and suitable prophylaxis, and cover practical guidance on food and water safety, insect bite prevention, altitude sickness where relevant, and what to do if you fall ill abroad.
Where multiple vaccines are needed, most can be given at the same appointment. Where a staged course is required, your follow-up doses are scheduled on the day and we contact you when they are due. A written travel health record, accepted by airlines, employers and border authorities, is issued before you leave.
Travellers who visit friends and relatives in high-risk regions, undertake adventure or rural travel, or work in medical settings abroad often face risks that a standard online checklist will not identify. The consultation is where those details are caught.

Yes. Same-day appointments are often available, and many single-dose vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid and meningitis ACWY, can be administered at your first visit. Call us in the morning to check what is available that day.
Eight to twelve weeks before departure is ideal for trips to Africa, Asia or South America, as some vaccines require a course of two or three doses. For most single-dose vaccines, four to six weeks is sufficient. If you are travelling sooner, book as soon as possible.
Yes. Your travel health clinician will advise on malaria risk for your destination and recommend suitable antimalarial prophylaxis. A private prescription for Malarone, doxycycline or another appropriate medication can be issued at the same appointment.
Yes. Saudi Arabia requires proof of MenACWY vaccination for Hajj and Umrah visa applications. The vaccination must be given at least ten days before arrival. We can administer the vaccine and issue a certificate on the day, which is accepted by the Saudi embassy and UK Hajj travel operators.
In most cases, yes. Multiple vaccines can be given at a single visit. Where a course requires more than one dose, your follow-up appointments are arranged on the day. We also remind you when staged doses are due.
No. You can book directly online or by phone without a referral letter from your GP. Our travel health clinicians handle everything from the initial consultation through to vaccination and prescription at the same appointment.
Yes. Our Birmingham clinic is a designated yellow fever vaccination centre and can issue the International Certificate of Vaccination (yellow card) required for entry to countries where yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. Note that the certificate does not become valid until ten days after vaccination.
Some travel vaccines are available on the NHS, including hepatitis A in certain clinical circumstances, typhoid, cholera and polio boosters. However, the majority of travel vaccines, including yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis B and tick-borne encephalitis, are not routinely funded by the NHS and must be accessed privately. NHS GP practices in Birmingham can also have limited appointment availability during peak travel seasons.
Yes. We offer travel vaccinations for children at our Birmingham clinic. Recommendations for children differ in some cases from adult protocols, and your clinician will adjust advice and dosing accordingly. Let us know at the time of booking that you are bringing a child.
A written travel health record confirming each vaccine administered, the date, and the batch number is issued at your appointment. For yellow fever, an International Certificate of Vaccination is issued separately. These documents are accepted by airlines, border authorities, employers and occupational health services.
Your clinician will review your health history, current medications and any conditions that may affect vaccine choice or timing at your pre-vaccination consultation. Certain conditions, for example immunosuppression, affect which vaccines are suitable. We will advise on the safest options for your individual situation.
