Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres: WHY IT MATTERS

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres: WHY IT MATTERS
The NHS does not provide the yellow fever vaccine, and you cannot get it from a standard GP practice or pharmacy. In the UK, only clinics registered as designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres (YFVCs) can administer and certify it. Our Birmingham clinic holds this designation from the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC).
The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis is an official WHO document. It is the only form of evidence accepted at borders for yellow fever entry requirements. A certificate issued by a non-designated clinic is not valid.
Two separate reasons apply to the decision to vaccinate: personal protection from a disease with no specific treatment and a high case fatality rate in severe cases, and border compliance, as many countries in sub-Saharan Africa require the ICVP as a condition of entry.
The certificate becomes valid ten days after vaccination and, under WHO guidance revised in 2016, is now valid for life.
Is the Yellow Fever Vaccine Available ON THE NHS?
Is the Yellow Fever Vaccine Available ON THE NHS?
No. The NHS does not provide yellow fever vaccination. It is available only through registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres, all of which operate privately. There is no NHS route to the ICVP.
For Birmingham travellers, a private YFVC appointment is the only way to obtain both the vaccine and the certificate before travel. Our Birmingham clinic offers same-day appointments with no waiting list and no GP referral required.
You must receive the yellow fever vaccine at least ten days before departure. The ICVP is not valid until day ten after injection, which means timing matters. If you are leaving within the next two weeks, let us know when booking and we will confirm whether your certificate will be valid for your departure date.
If you are combining yellow fever with other travel vaccines, including typhoid, hepatitis A, meningitis ACWY, or rabies, we can often give them at the same appointment.

Who Should Not Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?

Who Should Not Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?
Stamaril is a live attenuated vaccine and is not suitable for all travellers. Your clinician will assess suitability at your pre-vaccination consultation before giving any injection.
The vaccine is contraindicated in:
- Infants under nine months of age. Under six months is an absolute contraindication; infants aged six to nine months may be vaccinated in limited circumstances if the travel risk is high.
- Immunocompromised individuals, including those on immunosuppressive therapy, people with HIV who have significantly reduced CD4 counts, and those with primary immunodeficiency disorders.
- Those with a severe allergy to eggs or any vaccine component, as Stamaril is produced in eggs.
- Individuals with a thymus disorder, including thymoma, thymectomy, myasthenia gravis or DiGeorge syndrome.
- Pregnant women (vaccination is generally avoided; it may be considered when travel is unavoidable and the risk of yellow fever is high).
Travellers over 60 who have never been vaccinated face a slightly increased risk of rare but serious adverse events and require an individual risk assessment.
If vaccination is not possible, we can issue a medical exemption letter at our Birmingham clinic. This is not accepted at all borders; your clinician will advise on your specific destination.

Yellow Fever Vaccine Birmingham: FAQs
Yes. Our Birmingham clinic is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre (YFVC). We administer Stamaril and issue the official International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis at the same appointment, with same-day availability and no GP referral required.
A Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre is a clinic formally designated by the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC) to administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the ICVP. Only registered YFVCs can legally issue the certificate. Our Birmingham clinic holds this designation. A GP surgery, pharmacy or unregistered travel clinic cannot issue a valid ICVP.
Same-day appointments are often available. If you have an upcoming trip, book as early as possible so the certificate is valid by your departure date. The ICVP becomes valid 10 days after vaccination, so you must get the vaccine at least 10 days before you arrive in a country that requires it.
Let us know when booking. The ICVP becomes valid on the tenth day after injection, which means a departure date fewer than ten days away may mean the certificate is not valid in time. In some cases you may still choose to vaccinate for personal protection before travel, with the certificate becoming valid during your trip.
If you have a clinical contraindication, such as immune deficiency, a thymus disorder, or a severe egg allergy, our Birmingham clinic can issue a medical exemption letter. This is not universally accepted at borders. Some countries will refuse entry without a valid ICVP. Your clinician will advise on whether the exemption is appropriate and which destinations are likely to accept it.
Yes. We offer a full range of travel vaccines at our Birmingham clinic, including typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningitis ACWY, rabies and others. In most cases, we can give multiple vaccines at the same appointment. Let us know your destination and travel dates when booking and we will advise on what you need.
This depends on your specific itinerary. Many countries in sub-Saharan Africa require the ICVP as a condition of entry for all arriving travellers, regardless of where they are departing from. Others require it only from those arriving from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries. Some South American countries require or strongly recommend the vaccine for travel to specific regions.
Requirements can change, and your clinician will confirm the current rules for your destination at your appointment.Current pricing is available on our booking page. The ICVP certificate is included in the appointment fee. Call us if you would like a quote before booking.
Under WHO guidance updated in 2016, a single dose of yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong protection for most healthy adults, and the ICVP is valid for life from ten days after vaccination. The previous ten-year renewal requirement no longer applies.
Some countries, particularly in Africa, have not updated their border systems to reflect this change and may still query certificates issued more than ten years ago. If your existing certificate is older and you want a clean document, you can arrange re-vaccination.The vaccine is suitable for children from nine months of age and is recommended for travel to endemic regions. Infants under six months should not receive it. Those aged six to eight months may be vaccinated only in limited circumstances where the risk of exposure is very high.
In countries where the certificate is required for entry, infants under nine months are often exempt, though country-specific rules vary. Please mention the child’s age when booking. For most healthy adults, no. A single dose is considered sufficient for lifelong protection. If your existing certificate was issued after 11 July 2016, it should be accepted as valid for life at most borders.
If your certificate was issued before that date and shows a ten-year expiry, some border authorities may question it. Re-vaccination is an option if you want a clean, up-to-date document before travel. Most people experience only mild, short-lived reactions: soreness at the injection site, mild headache, low-grade fever and muscle aches for a few days. These are common and resolve on their own.
Two rare but serious adverse events are associated with yellow fever vaccination: yellow fever vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD), which resembles severe yellow fever, and yellow fever vaccine-associated neurotropic disease (YEL-AND), which affects the nervous system. Both are extremely rare, estimated at about 1 in 250,000 to 1 in 400,000 doses. Risk is slightly higher in those over 60 and in those with thymus conditions. Your clinician will discuss this in the context of your personal travel risk before administering the vaccine.
