Who Needs Yellow Fever Vaccination IN SUTTON COLDFIELD?
Yellow fever vaccination is required or recommended for travel to endemic regions in Africa and South America, and for those passing through countries where active border certificate requirements apply.

- Travellers to sub-Saharan Africa, including Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Rwanda, where proof of vaccination is required or strongly recommended for entry.
- Those visiting South American destinations including Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela, particularly when travelling outside major urban areas.
- Any traveller entering a country that requires the ICVP as a condition of entry, regardless of where their journey begins.
- Those transiting through a yellow fever endemic country, where the connecting route can trigger certificate requirements at the next border.
- Travellers planning safaris, wildlife expeditions or extended rural travel in Africa or the Amazon basin.
- Those undertaking medical, conservation or research fieldwork in endemic regions.
- Travellers who require the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis for visa or immigration purposes.
- Anyone whose existing certificate predates 11 July 2016 and who wants a new lifelong ICVP before their trip.
What Is a YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION CENTRE?

What Is a YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION CENTRE?
The yellow fever vaccine may only be administered and certificated by clinics registered as designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres (YFVCs). Registration is granted by the National Travel Health Network and Centre (NaTHNaC). Our Sutton Coldfield clinic holds this designation.
This matters because the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis is an official WHO document, and only a registered YFVC can issue it. A GP surgery, pharmacy or unregistered travel clinic cannot produce a valid ICVP. Arriving at a border with an invalid or unverifiable certificate can result in refusal of entry.
The yellow fever vaccine is not available on the NHS. All registered YFVCs operate on a private basis. For Sutton Coldfield travellers, a private YFVC appointment is the only route to both the vaccine and a valid certificate.
The ICVP becomes valid ten days after vaccination. Under WHO guidance updated in 2016, it is now issued as a lifetime document. The previous requirement for a ten-year booster no longer applies for most healthy adults.
Timing Your Yellow Fever Vaccine BEFORE TRAVEL
Timing Your Yellow Fever Vaccine BEFORE TRAVEL
The ICVP does not take effect immediately after vaccination. It becomes valid ten days after the injection, and border authorities at countries that require it will not accept a certificate with a date fewer than ten days before arrival.
This means the vaccine must be given at least ten days before your departure date. Ideally, vaccination should be completed as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. If you are due to depart within the next fortnight, let us know when booking and we will confirm whether the certificate will be valid in time.
Where multiple travel vaccines are needed alongside yellow fever, scheduling them early allows the full programme to be completed before travel. Our Sutton Coldfield clinic offers yellow fever alongside typhoid, hepatitis A, meningitis ACWY, rabies and other travel vaccines at the same visit.
If you are travelling at short notice and the certificate may not be valid for the outbound journey, your clinician will advise. Some travellers choose to vaccinate for personal protection even when timing is tight, with the certificate becoming valid during the trip itself.

Who Should Not Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?

Who Should Not Have the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE?
Stamaril is a live attenuated vaccine. It stimulates an immune response by introducing a weakened form of the yellow fever virus, which means it is not appropriate for all travellers. Your clinician at our Sutton Coldfield clinic will assess suitability before any vaccination is given.
Contraindications include:
- Infants under nine months of age. Six months is the absolute lower limit; those aged six to eight months may be vaccinated only in exceptional circumstances when travel risk is very high.
- Immunocompromised individuals: those on chemotherapy, high-dose corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive treatments, people with HIV with significantly reduced CD4 counts, and those with primary immunodeficiency disorders.
- Anyone with a severe egg allergy or a confirmed allergy to any component of the vaccine, as Stamaril is produced in eggs.
- Those with a thymus disorder, including thymoma, thymectomy, myasthenia gravis or DiGeorge syndrome.
- Pregnant women. Vaccination is generally avoided; it may be considered when travel to an endemic country is unavoidable and the risk of yellow fever is high.
Travellers over 60 who have not previously been vaccinated carry a small but elevated risk of rare but serious adverse events and require careful individual assessment before vaccination.
Where vaccination is contraindicated, a medical exemption letter can be issued. This is not accepted at all borders; your clinician will advise on your specific destination.

Yellow Fever Vaccine Sutton Coldfield: FAQs
Yes. Our Sutton Coldfield clinic is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We administer Stamaril and issue the official ICVP at the same appointment, with same-day availability and no GP referral required.
A YFVC is a clinic designated by NaTHNaC to administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the ICVP. Only a registered YFVC can legally issue the certificate. A GP practice, pharmacy or unregistered clinic cannot. Our Sutton Coldfield clinic holds this designation.
Same-day appointments are often available. Book as soon as your travel is confirmed. The ICVP becomes valid ten days after vaccination, so the vaccine must be given at least ten days before you enter a country that requires it.
Let us know when booking. If the ICVP will not be valid in time for your departure, your clinician will advise. Some travellers vaccinate for protection even when the certificate cannot be ready in time for the outbound journey.
If you have a contraindication, a medical exemption letter can be issued at our Sutton Coldfield clinic. This is not accepted at all borders. Your clinician will advise on which destinations are likely to accept it.
Mild reactions are common: soreness at the injection site, mild headache, low-grade fever and muscle aches for a few days. Two rare but serious adverse events exist: YEL-AVD (resembles severe yellow fever) and YEL-AND (affects the nervous system). Both are extremely rare, estimated at around one in 250,000 to one in 400,000 doses. Risk is slightly higher in those over 60. Your clinician will discuss this before vaccination.
This depends on your itinerary. Many countries in sub-Saharan Africa require the ICVP for all arriving travellers regardless of origin. Others require it only from those arriving from or transiting through endemic countries. Some South American countries require or recommend the vaccine for specific regions. Your clinician will confirm current requirements for your destination at your appointment.
Current pricing is on our booking page. The ICVP is included in the appointment fee. Call us for a quote before booking.
Under WHO guidance updated in 2016, a single dose provides lifelong protection for most healthy adults. The ICVP is now valid for life. The previous ten-year renewal requirement no longer applies, though some borders may still query older certificates. Re-vaccination is an option if you want a clean document.
Yes, from nine months of age. Under six months is an absolute contraindication. Those aged six to eight months may only be vaccinated in high-risk circumstances. Please mention the child’s age when booking.
Yes. We offer typhoid, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, meningitis ACWY, rabies and other travel vaccines at our Sutton Coldfield clinic. Most can be given at the same appointment. Let us know your destination and travel dates when booking.
