Do You Need a Private MENINGITIS C VACCINE ?

Do You Need a Private MENINGITIS C VACCINE ?
The NHS includes meningitis vaccination in the routine childhood schedule. The Hib/MenC vaccine is given at twelve months, and the MenACWY vaccine is offered to fourteen-year-olds through the school programme and to university students up to age twenty-five. Beyond these groups, it is not routinely available without a specific clinical reason.
Private vaccination at our clinics is available to anyone, regardless of NHS eligibility. Common reasons patients come to us:
- You are twenty-six or older and have not previously been vaccinated against meningitis C.
- You want to check your immunity status and receive a catch-up vaccination if needed.
- You are travelling to a country where meningococcal disease is common and want to be vaccinated before departure.
- You need to provide proof of MenACWY vaccination for a Hajj or Umrah visa application.
- You need a vaccination certificate for a UK or overseas university, occupational health service, or employer.
- You want a clinic appointment with time to discuss your options, rather than a pharmacy counter service.

What Is Meningitis C and WHY DOES VACCINATION MATTER?
What Is Meningitis C and WHY DOES VACCINATION MATTER?
Meningitis C is a form of bacterial meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C. It causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord and can lead to meningococcal septicaemia, a life-threatening bloodstream infection without immediate treatment.
The disease can develop very quickly. Symptoms such as a severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, high fever and a non-blanching rash can progress over hours rather than days. Without prompt medical intervention, meningococcal disease can be fatal within twenty-four hours. Even with treatment, around one in ten patients dies, and many survivors are left with lasting effects including hearing loss, neurological damage and limb amputation.
Before the MenC vaccine was introduced in the UK in 1999, serogroup C meningococcal disease killed an average of 150 people per year. Since the vaccination programme began, those cases have fallen by over 90 per cent. Vaccination remains the most effective protection, and the MenACWY formulation extends that protection to three further serogroups that continue to circulate, particularly in regions outside the UK.

How the Meningitis C Vaccine Works and WHAT TO EXPECT

How the Meningitis C Vaccine Works and WHAT TO EXPECT
The meningitis C vaccine works by introducing a protein that prompts the immune system to produce antibodies against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C. It does not contain live bacteria and cannot cause meningitis.
For most adults, a single dose of the meningitis C vaccine, or the broader MenACWY formulation, provides long-lasting protection. Adults vaccinated only in infancy may have reduced immunity over time, and a catch-up dose is worth discussing with your clinician, particularly before travel.
The MenACWY vaccine covers four serogroups of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y. It is required for Hajj and Umrah visa applications and is recommended by the NHS for travel to sub-Saharan Africa and Saudi Arabia. It is also the formulation used in the NHS school programme for fourteen-year-olds.
Protection typically develops within seven to ten days of vaccination. For travel, vaccination at least two to three weeks before departure is advisable. Side effects are usually mild: a sore arm, low-grade fever or mild fatigue for a day or two, which resolve without treatment.
Meningitis C Vaccine FAQs
The MenC vaccine protects against serogroup C meningococcal bacteria only. The MenACWY vaccine protects against four serogroups: A, C, W, and Y. MenACWY is now the standard formulation used by the NHS for teenagers and university students, and is the vaccine required for travel to high-risk regions and for Hajj and Umrah visa applications. We offer the MenACWY vaccine at our clinics, and your clinician will confirm which is most appropriate for you.
Yes. We offer the MenACWY vaccine to adults of any age at all our clinics, with no GP referral needed. This is particularly relevant for adults over twenty-five who are not covered by the NHS vaccination programme, and for anyone travelling to a country where meningococcal disease is prevalent.
Saudi Arabia requires MenACWY vaccination for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. Countries across the sub-Saharan African meningitis belt, including Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Ethiopia, Sudan, and neighbouring states, carry the highest risk of meningococcal disease and vaccination is strongly recommended for travellers. Speak to our clinicians about travel health requirements specific to your destination.
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived: soreness, redness or mild swelling at the injection site, a low-grade fever, and occasionally fatigue or muscle aches for a day or two. Serious reactions are rare. Your clinician will advise on what to expect and what to do if any symptoms concern you.
Yes. We issue a vaccination certificate or confirmation letter at the same appointment and email it to you as a PDF. Universities, employers, occupational health services, and embassies accept these, including for Hajj and Umrah visa applications.
Same-day appointments are often available at most of our ten UK clinics. Book online to see the earliest available slot, or call us to check what is available today.
Possibly. Immunity from childhood meningitis vaccination can wane over time. If you received only the Hib/MenC vaccine at twelve months but not a subsequent MenACWY dose, you may not be protected against serogroups A, W and Y. Your vaccination history will be reviewed at your pre-vaccination consultation and we will advise accordingly.
Yes. Saudi Arabia requires proof of MenACWY vaccination for Hajj and Umrah visas. The vaccination must be administered at least ten days before arrival. We can administer the vaccine and issue a vaccination certificate the same day, which the Saudi embassy and travel health services accept.
Yes. We offer the MenACWY vaccine to children at our clinics. The NHS school programme for fourteen-year-olds covers MenACWY through the school nursing team; private vaccination is an option for those who have missed the school dose, are travelling, or want earlier access.
For most adults, the MenACWY vaccine provides long-lasting protection, though the duration can vary. There is no fixed schedule for routine boosters in adults. For those at ongoing risk, such as regular travellers to high-risk regions, periodic review is advisable. Your clinician will advise on your individual situation.
Around twenty minutes in total, including the pre-vaccination health check and a short wait afterwards if recommended. The injection itself takes only a few minutes.
We can discuss your vaccination history at your pre-vaccination consultation. If your records are incomplete or unavailable, vaccination is generally considered safe and appropriate rather than waiting on records that may no longer be accessible.
